Wordsleuth's Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 1

Wordsleuth
Wordsleuth's Top 25 College Football Poll Week 1. Everyone and their mother is putting out a Top 25 college football list so I will jump on the bandwagon with my Week 1 Top 25 College Football Poll.

1. USC

Not an overwhelming performance against Idaho on Saturday but they don't need it. A win is a win and they still won by 35 points.

2. LSU

LSU looked down right impressive against Mississippi State last Thursday. Starting the year with a non-conference road game is tough, but they handled it well coming into their own in the second-half of a 45-point win.

3. West Virginia

The Mountaineers have two Heisman candidates in Pat White and Steve Slaton and their first game showed no signs of an imminent slowdown. The WVU running game will be hard to stop.

4. Oklahoma

Oklahoma thoroughly trounced North Texas and in a week that was lacking of large routs, the Sooners gave their fans something to cheer about.

5. Florida

Florida looked good in their first game back after their national title. Altough Western Kentucky isn't quite a power, Florida worked out some rust and Tim Tebow looked to be the real deal.

6. Louisville

Louisville is looking to make a run at the Big East Championship and a 73-10 victory over Murray State is a good way to start things off.

7. Wisconsin

Wisconsin looked slow early against Washington State but they turned it on in the second half, eventually winning by 3 touchdowns. Wisconsin should be a force in the Big Ten this season.

8. Texas

Texas will need to work out some kinks if they are going to compete for a national title this season. They looked very rusty against Arkansas State, but with a few of their top receivers out maybe this is understandable.

9. California

California beat up on Tennessee this weekend at home. Look out for the Golden Bears Pac-10 opponents.

10. Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech did not look impressive against East Carolina but the emotions that were flying around were not conducive to a slaughter. Also, ECU might be better than expected. Next week is the real test for VT. LSU is on the horizon.

11. Georgia

Many were calling for an upset of Georgia by Oklahoma State. Georgia looked impressive holding off the talented Cowboy offense.

12. UCLA

UCLA played Stanford on Saturday. This normally wouldn't be much of a challenge but new Cardinal head coach Jim Harbaugh has the Cardinal looking better this season. UCLA handled the game well, winning by almost 3 touchdowns. UCLA's defense looked great.

13. Ohio State

Ohio State lost a lot of talent off of last year's impressive squad. Even with that they looked good against Youngstown State. Even though YSU is I-AA, this is always a hardly fought game between these two teams and the Buckeyes won by almost 5 touchdowns. OSU never has problems recruiting so they could be reloaded.

14. Penn State

Penn State looked great against Florida International winning 59-0. They looked so good that some are picking them as a sleeper to win the Big Ten and vie for a national championship. We shall see on that.

15. Nebraska

Nebraska won handily at home in their first game but their first real test will come on the road this week at Wake Forest.

16. Auburn

Auburn looked like they would be upset at home by Kansas State until they turned the game around in the fourth quarter by playing great Auburn defense. If they continue like the did in the fourth quarter they will be a force in the SEC.

17. Rutgers

Rutgers had a tremendous season last year and many wonder if they can repeat the same magic. Rutgers looked fine against Buffalo at home last weekend.

18. Arkansas

Arkansas struggled in the first half against Troy but broke out a little in the second half. They only won by 20 and this should concern Razorback fans as they will be playing much tougher competition in the SEC.

19. Hawaii

Hawaii is on of the two picks to be this year's Boise State. Hawaii looked great at home and Heisman hopeful Colt Brennan threw 6 touchdown passes, starting his quest for the Heisman on the right foot.

20. Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech was the most impressive of the ACC teams this week. They went into South Bend and beat up on the Irish 33-3. This shows good signs for a team that lost Calvin Johnson.

21. TCU

TCU is the other pick for this year's Boise State. They started off well shutting out Baylor at home. While Baylor isn't a power, they are in the Big 12. That shows good signs for TCU's Conference-USA schedule.

22. Texas A&M

Texas A&M didn't look very good in the first half of their game against SMU. They poured it on in the second half and look to be top-25 worthy.

23. Clemson

Clemson played one of the two huge games in the ACC this weekend. Bowden Bowl IX went the way of the son for the fourth time in five years. Clemson could have a surprising run to Jacksonville in store for them.

24. Boston College

Boston College played the other of the two huge games in the ACC for the first weekend. The beat last year's ACC champion Wake Forest and looked very good doing in. Matt Ryan could be the conference player of the year/

25. Appalachian State

I know, I know, Appalachian State isn't even eligible for the division I-A poll since they are in the Football Championship Sub-Division, but, come on, some respect to the Mountaineers. They earn an honorary ranking after last week's historic upset.

Next 10 closest:

Boise State, Oregon, Missouri, Miami (FL), Oregon State, South Florida, Michigan, Southern Mississippi, Brigham Young

Cant put too much stock in PSU and Oklahoma's wins, they played downright horrible teams.

LSU's write-up should read "conference road game"

Expect Virginia Tech to fall to the bottom of the top twenty after LSU bheats the pants off of them.

  • Wordsleuth9/5/2007

I mixed up Texas A&M and Texas Tech's opponent (SMU and Montana State). Good catch.

  • Wordsleuth9/5/2007

Virginia Tech looked weak, but ECU's defense is better than expected and VT's emotional Saturday has to be taken into account a little. VT's spot will be better determined after this weekend.

I think you confused Texas A&M with Texas Tech as A&M played Montana St. and Tech played SMU and had a strong second half.

Good one. I agree with most of the rankings. I think VTech should not be as high as they are, but it is a popular placement among others. I just thought they looked pretty bad Saturday. Still a lot of talent though. Great Job!
