Virginia Tech, Georgia and Auburn moved down in the poll allowing the teams behind them to move up. VT moved to number 17, Georgia to number 25 and Auburn left the poll completely after two rough home games against Kansas State and South Florida.
Appalachian State also left the poll, as their spot was a one-week honorary ranking.
Oregon, South Florida and South Carolina entered the polls this week. South Carolina had a gritty, conference road game win at Georgia, Oregon completely dismantled Michigan away and South Florida went into Auburn and knocked them off.
1. LSU (2-0, 1-0)
USC wasn't in action last week and LSU made a statement by beating up on Virginia Tech. That is enough to earn LSU the number 1 spot in my rankings. Two huge wins against quality opponents, one away one home has LSU looking like the team to beat.
2. USC (1-0, 0-0)
USC didn't look all that impressive against Idaho last week and this week they were not in action. LSU's quality victories propel them ahead of USC while USC's idle week has them dropping a spot.
3. West Virginia (2-0, 0-0)
West Virginia looked like they didn't have it on Saturday during their trip to Marshall, but they found their game in the second-half and literally ran away with it. Don't hold to much against West Virginia since this was a rivalry game away. The end result ended up being what you would expect.
4. Oklahoma (2-0, 0-0)
Even though Miami is not what they used to be this was still an impressive win for Oklahoma. An almost 40-point win over Randy Shannon's Hurricanes has the Sooners right in the mix for the national title early in the season.
5. Florida (2-0, 0-0)
Florida has yet to be challenged this season but they have yet to play a top-quality team. They are good enough to be number 5 right now, but their real tests will come when conference play starts.
6. Louisville (2-0, 0-0)
Louisville saw first hand how good Middle Tennessee State can be on Thursday night but they still pulled out a nice victory. The Louisville offense looked great, but the performance of the defense should scare Cardinals fans, especially with West Virginia still looming on the schedule.
7. Texas (2-0, 0-0)
Texas looked pretty bad in week 1 and they looked pretty bad to start off week 2. In the second half against TCU the Longhorns looked like they found their game and they went on to a convincing win over the ranked Horned Frogs. This bodes well for the near future for Texas.
8. California (2-0,0-0)
A convincing win over Tennessee and a well-fought win over Colorado State has the Golden Bears at number 8. Don't let the game against Colorado State fool you, the Rams are a legitimate team and Cal had to face them away. Cal looks poised for a great season.
9. Wisconsin (2-0, 0-0)
After a great opening weekend the Wisconsin Badgers struggled at UNLV. While UNLV isn't a great power, they are still not a bad team. Add to that having the Badgers play in the desert and you can see why the offense might have been sluggish. The Badgers won, but dropped a few points because of the convincing wins of Texas and Cal.
10. Penn State (2-0, 0-0)
Penn State moves into the top ten with a convincing win over Notre Dame. Although this game may not hold the same clout that it looked to before the season started, this is still a big rivalry win over a decent team.
11. UCLA (2-0, 0-0)
UCLA had a convincing win at home over Brigham Young. BYU was a popular pick to be this year's Boise State, but they could not compete with the Bruins. The UCLA team, and especially the defense look to be for real.
12. Ohio State (2-0, 0-0)
Ohio State looked alright against Akron and move up because of losses of two teams ahead of them. On another note, what could be better for Buckeye fans? A 2-0 start for them and an 0-2 start for Michigan.
13. Rutgers (2-0, 0-0)
Rutgers had no trouble with Navy on Friday night. They move up because of the losses by Virginia Tech and Georgia.
14. Nebraska (2-0, 0-0)
Nebraska played its first-ever game in ACC country and won at Wake Forest. Wake is the defending ACC champions so this was no roll-over team. A deserved call for pass-interference on Wake's last offensive play could have changed this game completely, though.
15. Arkansas (1-0, 0-0)
Arkansas was idle this week and just like the teams ahead of them this week, they benefit from the losses by Virginia Tech, Georgia and Auburn.
16. Georgia Tech (2-0, 0-0)
Georgia Tech completely dismantled the Irish on the road at South Bend and they followed that up by a complete pasting of Samford at home. While Samford is no power, Georgia Tech's defense has now given up only 3 points in 2 games.
17. Virginia Tech (1-1, 0-0)
Virginia Tech drops seven spots for losing at LSU. They did not drop any further than that because they were not expected to win and LSU just looks to be that dominant a team this season.
18. Boston College (2-0, 2-0)
Boston College had another impressive win at home against an ACC opponent. BC decided to open up the season with two ACC games and so far it has paid of with them going 2-0. They welcomed the defending conference champions and their former head coach Tom O'Brien in consecutive weeks.
19. South Carolina (2-0, 1-0)
South Carolina went into Georgia and took care of business in a conference away game. The Gamecocks looked impressive this weekend after a not-so-impressive win over Louisiana-Lafayette the week before. There might be something to Spurrier saying they could win the SEC, but there is still a long way to go.
20. Oregon (2-0, 0-0)
Oregon looked great at home against Houston, but they looked amazing on the road against Michigan. Say what you want about Michigan's struggles but Oregon went into the Big House and thoroughly smacked them, on offense and defense. The Ducks might be a force in the PAC-10.
21. Clemson (2-0, 1-0)
Clemson looked good against Florida State and they also looked good on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. Clemson will really be tested later this season in the ACC, but for now they are number 21.
22. Hawaii (2-0, 0-0)
Hawaii narrowly escaped with a win against Louisiana Tech. This is not too surprising considering Hawaii is a much different team when they play off the island. Hawaii should be fine though.
23. South Florida (2-0, 0-0)
South Florida went into Auburn and came out with a well-fought and well-deserved victory. As I said last week USF would be a tough game for Auburn and USF proved me right. This is the Bulls arrival on the national scene and I don't expect their stay to be short.
24. Texas A&M (2-0, 0-0)
Even though they won against Fresno State, the Aggies were very unimpressive. Fresno State gave them all they could handle at home and should have won the game until one of the weirdest plays/calls in the history of college football.
On a side note, watch the replay of this game. I have never seen any referees basically call a do-over before.
25. Georgia (1-1, 0-1)
Georgia could not pull out the victory at home against South Carolina. After looking so good last week against Oklahoma State they took a big step backwards by losing to their conference foe. Georgia barely hangs on to the top-25.
