Focusing on one issue at a time means that you have to prioritize. If you run into your supervisor in the hallway, consider that you have a moment or two to ask for the most important, pressing issue at hand. This means that you cannot complain about the lack of clean towels in the bathroom, ask for an increase in a project budget, mention that your printer is out of toner, or any myriad concerns that might be on your mind. You need to prioritize the message that you need to get across right then and take advantage of the opportunity to send a clear, uncluttered message with your comment or request.
This communication rule works for whomever you might be conversing with'"a coworker, client, colleague, etc. Whether you are sending and email or addressing someone at a meeting'"thoroughly share and discuss one idea or issue at a time to prevent confusion. Before moving on to the next topic or issue, make sure that you have come to an agreement or solution about what you have been talking about. This way, you don't end up with multiple open "windows" of communication'"this is a good way to set the stage for NO decisions getting made. Stay uncluttered and focused and, chances are, your communication on the job will improve.
