Work it Out: Exercise's Effect on Diabetes

S. Ann
Diabetes affects millions of Americans each year, in many different ways. There are many different types of diabetes. The two main types of diabetes are Type-1 and Type-2. Type-1 diabetes is known as the insulin dependent diabetes. This type develops when the pancreas produces little to no insulin. Insulin controls the level of sugar in your blood. There is no known cure for diabetes, but it is treatable. Type-1 requires dedication in keeping track or blood sugar levels and injections of insulin by a syringe, insulin pump, or insulin pen as treatment. Type-2 diabetes is due to a resistance or reduced sensitivity to insulin. This is combined with reduced or non-existent production of insulin to maintain blood sugar levels. Treatment for Type-2 diabetes is eating a proper diet, medication, insulin supplementation, and exercise.

How Does Exercise Change After Diabetes Diagnosis?

Exercise will not have a major effect on Type-1 diabetes, but can be helpful. Consult with a doctor. Exercise can be dangerous for Type-1 diabetes due to sugar levels fluctuating greatly. Careful monitoring before, during, and after a workout is best. A sedentary lifestyle and obesity can lead to Type-2 diabetes. Exercise can help prevent Type-2 diabetes. Exercise and good health can help the body fight against negative effects which can occur due to diabetes. It is one of the treatments for Type-2 since exercise can lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Thirty minutes per day of moderate or high levels of exercise can help control the sugar level in the blood and prevent diabetes, according to experts.

Can Exercise Be Helpful In Diabetics?

If you already have Type-2 diabetes, exercise can helpful by increasing the sensitivity to insulin and decreasing the sugar level in the blood. With weight loss and exercise, medication may not be needed and the sugar level can be safely maintained. Exercise will help the body process the glucose faster and lower the blood sugar level, according to doctors. In addition, it will allow the diabetic to feel more energetic and healthier than ever before.

Are Diabetics At Higher Risks For Heart Disease?

People with diabetes are at a greater risk of heart disease and should consult with their physician about an exercise program. High intensity exercise will have the best effect for anyone who has been cleared by their doctor. If one has lived a sedentary lifestyle or has other medical problems, a low intensity exercise program prescribed by a physician would be best.
