When it comes to getting a workout, the last thing you want to do is waste time in the gym.

Breaking a sweat does not necessarily constitute a workout, which is why it is important to maximize your time in the gym or on the trail.

One common mistake people make when it comes to working out is concentrating too much on other things while working out. Going to the gym with a buddy is always a good idea; however, it is easy to focus more on chatting with your friend than the amount of calories you are burning. Make sure to hold each other accountable to getting a good workout.

Another distraction people find at the gym is reading a magazine. While reading and running on the elliptical is a great idea for keeping stamina, it is possible to focus too much on what you are reading, and disregard the fact that your heart rate is not increasing. Working out requires focus on pushing your body.

Some fitness experts recommend watching television with headphones instead, or listening to music, because both of these require less mental attention.

Another common exercise faux pas is sweating it out. Many people think that sweating a lot means they are getting more of a workout. In reality though, too much sweat is usually a sign of dehydration. Sweating may be good for your pores, but if you don't replace all the liquid you are losing, you may be in for more than you bargained for.

Dehydration can put you in a greater state of injuries and illness, so stay hydrated! Dehydration also leads to cramping. Keeping hydrated usually means taking a water bottle with you and making sure to get plenty of liquids in after a workout.

Another common mistake that many people make is that of avoiding the weight machines. Many are content to limit themselves to cardio only. While a cardio workout is essential to burning calories, building stamina and endurance, it should be coupled with strength training. While strength training often does not have the immediate feedback that a cardio workout does, it is definitely important to overall health.

Strength and resistance training can help to strengthen muscles needed for every day activities. It is also great for keeping muscles in shape.

Another mistake a lot of females make when it comes to working out is fearing the bulk up. In other words, a lot of females will avoid lifting weights because they don't want to build muscle. Fortunately, most females will not get huge from lifting weights on a regular basis. If anything they will lose fat and build muscle at the same time. Unless females are taking growth hormones, they will often not become a muscle woman.

It is also important to not skip meals when trying to build a workout routine. Many people make the mistake of working out on an empty stomach. The problem with this is that your body does not have enough fuel to get a proper workout. It will become tired more quickly and endurance will be lacking. Eating breakfast on workout days is important to get the most out of the workout.

Another suggestion is to take advantage of the gym fitness trainers. Many trainers are already on the floor and they are there to help you figure out how to use the machines, which machines will target which muscle groups and answer many of your questions. Fitness experts recommend being resourceful when it comes to working out and making sure you are getting the most out of that gym membership.

Working out should include fuel in your body, including food and water. It is also a good idea to work out with a friend and hold each other accountable.
