I have found that they open up their wallets to fund significantly more when they believe in the cause that you are pursuing. Even if you are making a for-profit independent film you can still get your local businesses to help fund your project. Many of them will donate food if you mention them in your title credits. For example, here in Albuquerque, NM a film was shot that represented a memorial to the life of a local hero. His death was a huge loss to everyone. Those of us that loved him wanted to make an independent film that would help raise money to continue his work with local children. The project offered complete support form the locals here in New Mexico and Arizona. Filming locations where allowed for the film that are significant landmarks to route 66. It still stands as the best tribute film made by any independent filmmaker. It is something that I am proud to have been a part of.
