Working from Home: Common Traps and Tips

Mindy G
Working from home sounds like a dream to many out there in the workforce. Parents with young children, people with disabilities, older workers looking to semi-retire, and those getting tired of their long commutes to work. It is not uncommon to be drivin down the road and see an advertisement hanging from a utility pole, and sign place at a busy intersection, or even an ad in a newspaper. They all sound so promising, but many of these are scams.

The most common scam out there is the one providing payments for stuffing envelopes. Most of the time, you are mailing out an advertisement for the same job you are currently doing. Others have such strict guidelines on folding, that they very rarely pay out. You find yourself doing the work but not gettting paid for it.

Many advertisements ask you to send in money for a starter kit. These are ones that you should avoid. You should not have to pay someone for work. The only exception would be if you are wanting to start your own business. This would require some start-up costs on your end. However, for clerical or adminstrative jobs, there should not be any "upfront" costs.

There are several work-from-home websites out there that are legit. One popular site is www.wahm.com. This site provides a large variety of jobs. Some of these jobs are administrative and telemarketing. Other options include starting your own small business selling AVON, Tupperware, books or candles. There is definitely something for almost anyone out there looking. On this site, they have message boards for almost any job you can think of. Their members are helpful and willing to help newcomers as well.

Another way to determine if an opportunity is a scam, is to check the Better Business Bureau. This can give you a chance to do some research on the company before you waste your time and money. Also, don't send money to any business that doesn't provide a phone number and a chance to talk with real people doing the position you are applying for.

Other popular places to search for work-from-home jobs is on employment websites such as Monster, Careerbuilder, or even Craigslist. Even though these are employement websites, you still need to be careful of the opportunities they have listed.

While you are searching for a work-at-home job on the internet, you will find more jobs than you can imagine. It can get frustrating, but just be patient. It takes some people several months to even find an opportunity that is right for them. Just remember to use common sense. Like the old saying goes, "If it looks to good to be true, it probably is".
