Working from Home with Kids: Why You Should Try a "Kid Swap"

The Perfect Solution for Work-at-Home Parents

Jennifer Foote
Are you a work-at-home parent? If you are and if you have been one for sometime, you may have already found ways to keep your child occupied while you work from home. However, there are still likely times when you wish that you had another option; an option that would allow you to get more work done. That option can come in the form of a "kid swap." Have you ever heard of this type of arrangement before; it is sometimes referred to as a "kid swap," or a "kid exchange?" If you haven't, you may want to take the time to learn more about it.

The term "kid swap," or "kid exchange," sounds a little bit weird or even freaky, but they are phrases that are sometimes used to describe arrangements that are actually quite common among many parents, particularly work-at-home parents. With this "kid swap," arrangement, you agree to watch or baby-sit a child that you know for a day or a few hours and the parents of the child in question agree to do the same for you, hopefully in the same week. This is nice as it allows you to get a day or at least of few hours of uninterrupted work in. Many other parents also like this arrangement as well, even if they aren't actually work-at-home parents. The "kid swap," arrangement is actually quite popular as it enables parents to get a few chores or errands done or even just get a little bit of time to themselves.

If you would like to try this "kid swap," arrangement out, you need to find another parent who would be willing to do it with you. For the best chance of success and safety, you will want to try and make this arrangement with other parents that you know, as you are more able to guarantee the safety of your child or children when they are in someone else's care. If you do not know of any other work-at-home parents, you should still ask any other parents that you know. There are many parents out there who don't work a traditional nine to five job or even during the traditional workweek; therefore, many would love the opportunity to make doctor's appointments or other appointments during the week, without having to bring their children along.

If you are still unable to find someone that you know who would be willing to make an "kid swap," arrangement with you, you may want to think about speaking to those that turn up at the same functions as you, like school, preschool, church, or even the park. Just to be on the safe side, if you really don't know much about the other child or parent in question, you will want to be careful. Before allowing your child to visit a home that they haven't visited before, you may want to think about having a supervised play date first. Since most parents also care about the wellbeing of their children, this isn't unexpected. You may even find that the other parent involved also wants to visit your home, just to see if it is a safe place for their child to be.

The decision as to whether or not you want to make a "kid swap," or "kid exchange," arrangement with another parent, preferably another work-at-home parent, is yours to make; however, there are a number of benefits to doing so. Some of those benefits include allowing your child to make new friends and interact with others, as well as time to work from home uninterrupted.

Great article! I have on occasion swapped my kids out. I am lucky to have neighbors that understand that I do work from home, and one has offered to take mine any time I need it. Great idea!
