Working From Home Is Not A Luxury

Amy Ulibarri
Working from home is not the glamorous, lazy job that so many people think when they hear someone works from home. It is quite a challenge to balance your life of work and family when working from home.

When you work at a regular job, you leave the house every work day and return after work. You know when you're scheduled to be at work and your family knows that you are working. This may not seem like a luxury, but it really is. When a person works from home, initially there is not a work and home schedule. There are constant distractions from the family, friends, and household responsibilities. When you work from home, someone always needs something. The kids always have to go somewhere or need help with something.
You're constantly asking yourself "Why can't they find their own socks?" Or you have the opposite problem that you can't seem to stop working and end up neglecting your household responsibilities. There are things to help improve the situation so you do end up getting work done.

First thing that has to be done is you have to set your schedule. Whether you decide to work around your kid's or your spouse's schedule is your choice. Just set certain hours each day that you will devote to working. If you do all hours at one time, or divide it into segments, is up to you. You have to decide what will work best for your family. Once you decide on your hours, tell everyone! This is a vital second step. If no one knows that you are working and are not to be disturbed during certain times, you will be. Unfortunately, sticking with this can be difficult. You may have to tell people several times that you are not to be disturbed while working. You might have to tell a friend you will call her back, or tell your kids that you will help them find the sock after your shift is over. With persistence, eventually they will understand, then you will get work done, thus get paid. After all, making money is the reason you are working from home.

The third step is to stick with your schedule. Now, you might be saying that you have already told everyone what your schedule is and have even convinced the kids that not everything is an emergency. That is not what this step is about. This step involves you! You have to determine that when your shift is over, then you need to wrap it up, put it away, close it up, whatever needs to be done to be done. This is now family time. Don't spend all night at your desk when you should be with your family. This will lead to resentment on everyone's side. You will resent that there is more work to get done, and your family will resent that you are always working. Let go. Realize you are only one person and if you were at a regular job, you would be working overtime and getting paid overtime money. If you aren't getting paid overtime, then stop working when you are suppose to!

If you can do all these steps successfully then working from home will be a luxury. You will find time to get everything accomplished if you schedule properly. You will be more relaxed while working if everyone, including you, knows that when your shift is over, you will be available. You won't have guilt that you are spending less time with your family now than you did when you worked away from home. You won't have guilt that you aren't getting any work done. You have solved these problems. No reap the rewards of your hard work.
