Working from Home with a Toddler: Balance Being a Stay-at-Home Parent and a Work-at-Home Parent

Jennifer Foote
Are you a parent who is interested in working from home? If you are, how old is your child or children? If you have a toddler in the home, you may be wondering if it is possible to work from home, as your toddler will likely end up staying home with you all day. As with being any type of parent, being a work-at-home mom or dad of a toddler can be complicated, but it is more than possible to do.

One of the best ways to go about being a good home based worker and a good parent is to carefully choose which type of job you accept. When working from home, you can start your own business or you can work as an employee for an existing company, but one that hires home based workers. Since toddlers are often hard to keep occupied for long hours, you may want to think about taking a job that allows you to set your own hours or you may want to think about starting your own business, as you tend to have more freedom
.
Another way that you can go about being a good home based worker, as well as a good parent is by arranging activities for your toddler to participate in when you try and get some work done. The good news about activities is that there are an unlimited number of activities to choose from. For instance, a large number of work-at-home parents rely on arts and crafts. When it comes to arts and crafts, you don't have to think elaborate. Arts and crafts can be something as simple as water colors, construction paper, stickers, and so forth. Most toddlers, both boys and girls, love showing off their artistic skills.

In addition to arts and crafts, there are many parents who rely on television and toys to help keep their toddlers occupied when working from home. As many experts say, television is okay as long as it is used in moderation and not as a full-time babysitter. Many parents, like me, often find success by turning on an educational program or an educational DVD. As for toys, if you are the work-at-home parent of a toddler, you may want to think about keeping a separate bin of toys for when you work. Having a separate group of toys, ones that are put up at all other times, is nice as it tends to limit or reduce the boredom that many toddlers experience when playing with the same toys over and over again.

Another great way to be able to get work done is to think about hiring the services of a babysitter, even if it is just once a week or for a couple of hours a day. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find other parents, teenagers, or elderly individuals who use babysitting as a way to make extra money. In fact, many would even likely be willing to come into your home to watch your children, which may help by giving you a little bit of security and peace of mind.

The above mentioned tips are just a few of the many that may make working from home with a toddler easier on you. In all honesty, different things work for different parents and toddlers. That is why you may need to rely on trial and error to see what does work or what doesn't work for you and your child.

Great tips, my son is 11 months old now, I bet in a year stickers would entertain him. If I tried that now he would probably try to eat them. :)
