It is much easier to make an independent film with toddlers and young children. Kids do not have personal and ego issues that they are trying to protect. They are also easier to satisfy than adult cast members. Independent filmmakers can provide small sandwiches and snacks for kids. Many children will be happy with almost anything that they get.
However, it is important to find the children who are not camera shy. Filmmakers will find it much easier to work with children who do not freeze up when the director yells "action". It is also necessary to work with children to can read well and follow directions easily. Working with kids can be a fun experience while making an independent film. The production time can be cut in half when using a kid who has a lot of personality.
Much Cheaper
It is cheaper to make independent films with kids instead of adults. Filmmakers will not have to worry about union restrictions or any other expense that comes with casting adult actors. Kids are willing to work for less money or no money at all. Independent filmmakers can make a movie with kids practically for free. This is especially true if you have your own children.
When using your own children, there is no need to chase parents around for signed release forms. Online video producer and blogger, Kevin Nalty uses his children in many of his videos. His online videos have become quite popular. You can also cast child relatives in independent films. Babysitting time can be turned into production time and vice versa.
Audience Pleaser
The public loves children. Mass mounts of kid videos on Youtube prove this to be true. There is a segment on a news show in my town that shows photos of babies on their first birthday. That same time slot could be filled with more important news such as the latest in a crime investigation or information about what is going on with our troops. The news is covering the first birthday of random babies in the area. This means that people are more interested in children than many other activities and information.
Independent filmmakers can take advantage of the public's child obsession by casting kids in their movies. Films can be made with kids and marketed to an adult audience. They can also be made for a younger audience. There are many cable networks and home video distributors that cater to children. Filmmakers can increase their chances of finding distribution with a kid's movie.
