Working Out at Home vs. Going to the Gym

There's one question that I've heard quite a lot of times about working out. Would you prefer to work out at home or at the gym? Come to think of it, this is of a personal preference depending on the person's needs, comfort, accessibility, etc. However, if you can actually do either one but is undecided on which to choose, here are some comparisons between the two.

When it comes to equipments, the gym will have the advantage. Usually, gyms have complete equipments and have really expensive machines that targets specific muscles which is difficult to do with limited equipments at home. It is quite impractical, unless you're really rich, to buy these equipments for personal use. Gyms are also fully equipped when it comes to free weights.

I've been to a couple of gyms and some of them do offer some programs or group activities that make it more interesting in joining the gym. Doing strength training alone is perfectly fine but when it comes to activities such as aerobics, Pilates and yoga, it usually is much better to do it with other people. There are also other possible features in gyms such as swimming pools, spas, free massage and so on.

Another good thing about working out at a gym is that they have personal trainers who can assist you. Most of them are licensed professionals and will help you do your routines properly to make it more effective and lessen the risk of injuries. They can even motivate you and give you tips on your diet.

On the other hand, working out at home is so much comfortable. You control your own time and space. You don't have to travel to the gym and spend money on transportation. It's also much better to relax at home after a good workout. For most of us who are concerned about hygiene, most of the gyms especially those premier gyms, maintain hygiene when it comes to their equipments and facilities. Most share showers, shampoos, soap and some even share towels. They do clean it but again, it's not as secure as when you're working out at home especially if you're sensitive.

Working out at home is free. Working out at a gym would cost you a whole lot of money. You need to pay for the entrance fee, membership fee, rentals, your food, your transportation, services of a personal trainer and so on. Buying your own equipment and doing your workouts at home is more likely feasible and practical if you're on a tight budget.

Time management is also important especially if you have a busy lifestyle. If you go to work or school, you need to properly allocate time for your workout. Consider the travel time to reach the gym and to go back, the length of your workout, rest time, your schedule at work whether you want to go before or after your shift and so on. And yes, it's not going to be much of an issue if you are working out at home.

I've had the chance to work out at the gym but most of the time I do my exercise at home. The quality of workout may be better at the gym but there are a whole lot of routines that you can do at home that rivals even the best workouts at the gym. Ask your friends, do your research and/or apply what you're doing in the gym. Just remember that the most important thing, whether you're working out at home or at a gym, is that you remain consistent in your program especially if you're trying to lose weight. For now, I can see myself working out at home still.
