Working While RVing: How to Generate Income While on the Road

Joyce Ryan
While RVing used to be something only retired people could afford to do, it is now possible to work while you are on the road in your RV. The Internet has made it possible to perform a number of telecommuting jobs without ever setting foot inside an office. If you prefer to work a traditional job, there can be a lot of seasonal work available in the towns you are passing through in the RV.

Working while RVing: Seasonal jobs

Seasonal jobs are often attractive for travelers wishing to work while RVing. Think about the types of industries that are popular during the current season. In the springtime, nurseries, plant shops, and even local farms may need temporary help. Think about jobs involving children in the summertime when they are out of school. Kid-friendly attractions like waterslide parks, miniature golf courses, arcades, and theme parks are usually looking for extra workers during the busy season. If you enjoy sports, the local baseball stadium may need ushers or concession workers for the season. Autumn brings pumpkin patch jobs and extra need for leaf raking and other yard clean-up tasks. Seasonal jobs for RVers are even more prevalent in the winter because of the retail stores' need for holiday workers.

Working while RVing: Telecommuting

Telecommuting jobs have also opened up many new opportunities for RVers wishing to work from the road. All you need is a laptop and an occasional Internet connection in order to make decent money from web site design, transcription, freelance writing, data entry, or dropshipping on eBay. You may even be able to continue your previous profession while you are traveling the country in an RV. Accountants, lawyers, salesmen, and many other professionals can often set up a profitable consulting business on the road. With today's technology and ease of travel, the traditional one-location office is less of a requirement for a successful business.

Working while RVing: Setting up your mobile office

If you will be using your RV as a mobile office, make sure you have adequate room to work efficiently. Every good home office needs a desk area. You can either use one of the RVs collapsible tables as a temporary work space or set up a more permanent desk in the bedroom area. There are many small, portable desks that can be used to create a quick home office in your RV. Businesses requiring inventory or a meeting space for clients can be rather difficult to run from an RV, unless you have an especially large vehicle. For client meeting purposes, it may be better to rent conference room space from a virtual or shared office arrangement in the nearest town.
