Workout Tips for More Enjoyable, Exciting Exercise

Your workout is only as good as the number of times you actually go to the gym! Here are my top tips for making sure your workout routine is enjoyable, exciting and different each time. You will be more likely to commit to a solid workout routine if you know how to create variety and entertainment in your schedule.

1. An iPod Nano or other small MP3 player is a must-have. Gym workouts are much more bearable (and the same goes for running/jogging) if you have a lightweight, solid-drive MP3 player. A solid-drive MP3 player is best because it can handle the abuse of jumping up and down or the occasional drop on the gym floor.

2. Give yourself "challenges" to stay motivated. Tell yourself you will strike up a conversation with that cute blonde after 15 or 20 reps; treat yourself to a protein shake after a predetermined amount of time on the elliptical machine or treadmill. Change your reward system regularly so you don't get bored with it.

3. Buy new songs for your MP3 player. You will even grow sick of your most favorite music if you listen to the same "workout playlist" each morning. Borrow from friends and buy new CDs as often as possible. Only listen to new music at the gym; it will make going to the gym a "treat" you look forward to rather than an annoying or dull chore.

4. Be social. A gym routine is a lot more enjoyable when you know other "regulars" with similar schedules and you see them there on a frequent basis. Maybe get the treadmill next to someone you know so that you can keep pace with them or strike up a conversation when you start to get fatigued and bored.

5. End with a "reward ritual" -- such as a massage, or trip to the local record store or mall. Reward rituals make you far more likely to visit the gym again in the future, and to honor the schedule you have established for yourself.

Finally, consider giving yourself a break once in a while. Take a whole week off at least once per two months; do absolutely no gym workouts during this time. This way, the routine will not become too much of a chore, and you will actually look forward to getting back to your regular schedule.
