Workplace Etiquette How to Dress Professionally

Depending upon the organization, dress code can be very important to a company. The way you present yourself, especially on a job interview or your first day of work, leads anyone's first impression of you. Many do not realize how important it is to even appear successful. A neat appearance goes a long way because it can represent organization, cleanliness, etcetera. Some people do not have this problem, but a big percentage of women and men tend to overdo it or do not even put any effort in dressing to impress. In this article, I give tips on how to dress for your success.

Suits: Male or female, wearing a suit makes a bold statement. It says to people that you want to be taken seriously. The proper interview colors for suits are black, blue, and gray. Leave the colors for way down the line when you have proven yourself worthy. Women should wear a suit that has matching skirt to an interview. Jobs want to know that you will be willing to be a powerhouse. The fit of a suit is just as important as the style. If there is a certain suit that really does not fit you, take the suit to an alteration shop. Get your specific measurements and take note for future reference. Some clothing shops have quality with the services they offer, and some do not so choose wisely. Designer suits usually have the best fit for some reason, so look for sales at department stores near you.

Pants: There is nothing wrong with expressing your personal style. Just know that your professional style can take you a long way. For instance, Khakis are a very good piece to have in your wardrobe and that goes for both sexes. Khakis are a neutral color that can be worn with all types of colors. Do not wear tight pants, pants without belts, or brightly colored pants. All of these will draw attention to you and not in a good way.

Shoes: What you wear on your feet is just as significant as what you wear on the rest of your body. People take notice of you from head to toe- pun intended. With that being said, take note that shoes should be clean and shiny, not dusty and worn out. Women: wear comfortable shoes on the job. It is more difficult to look for fashionable shoes without all the heel action, but if you want to avoid limping home from work, comfort is a must. I suggest Aerosoles. This brand is a favorite in my family because it is known for good looks, fit, and most importantly, comfort. Men, get your shoes shined regularly.

Jewelry: One big piece of advice: Less is more. Wearing lots of jewelry around an office setting is considered too flashy and a big no-no. Keep in mind once again that people are watching you so keep the stereotypes to a minimum. Diamond studs are acceptable and an occasional necklace is okay, but do not overdo it. A plain black or brown watch is also suitable because you need to know the time wherever you are.

Fragrance: This is not clothing or accessory item, but it is very important because how you smell is also a reflection of you. Sometimes, depending upon the brand, a person can smell you before seeing you. You definitely do not want to enter a person's office and offend their sense of smell. Do not take a bath in your fragrance. Lightly apply the fragrance to specific areas of the body (wrists, neck, clothing), but don't overdo it! Differentiate between smells you should wear to work from the ones away from work.
