The Highlights of Hugo Chavez

Ebey Soman
President Hugo Chavez or should i say, Sheik Chavez, presents a new popularized brand of Anti-American sentiments the world has seen, proudly co-presented by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Chavez is drunk on power. Within Venezuela, Chavez has already rewritten the constitution, stacked the courts with favorable judges and has been throwing political opponents into jail. And now he is looking to expand his influence beyond Venezuela.

To Chavez, the biggest foreign influence comes from America and thus it is now his enemy. With over billions of dollars in profits coming from CITGO (owned by Venezuela)and being America's fourth largest oil supplier, Hugo Rafael Chvez Fras thinks he has enough economic and political resources left to power play aganist American influence in the Latin American region.I agree, America has been lax and failed completely to look after the interests of our Central and South American neighbors and Chavez's new political brand can seriously hurt American influence in that region and even undermine our diplomatic relations with those nations.

On an International Stage, Hugo Chavez used his platform as a diplomat to specifically choose one delegate at the United Nations and attack their leadership (his speech on America at the UN in New York) and has teamed up with well known Anti-US nations such as Russia, Iran and Cuba to shun America at every possible opportunity.

He has made a unholy alliance with Cuba and has slept in the same bed with Iran and is now making high profile visits to Iraq and toying with the Columbian rebel organizations with whom he claims to have influence over while not being so clear about it. Recently, he has claimed territory from the nation of Guyana which is all the more hotly contested.

During his reign of madness, he has attacked leaders from several countries around the world and make both diplomatic and personal attacks on several countries supporting the USA. Chavez has also attacked Tony Blair and numerous other key international diplomats and leaders.

More recently at the Ibero-American summit in Chile, Hugo Chavez rudely kept interrupting Spain's Prime Minister (violating the rules of the meeting and parliamentary procedure)and insulted Spanish government officials, leading to the remark by the king of Spain, telling Chavez to "shut up" so the meeting can continue without constant interruptions and outbursts.

Hugo Chaves also shown a new level of immaturity as he resorted to calling leaders of nations names. At a UN address, he called President Bush of the United States of America the "diablo" or the devil. At the summit in Chile, he called the former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a fascist and continued attacks aganist him. Then later at the People's summit in Santiago, Hugo Chavez once again attacked the King of Spain in a unprovoked chain on insults. He has also cut of relations with President Alvaro Uribe of Columbia because of his personal "ego" issues.

At home, Chavez has alienated the upper class and the middle class from the large political processes within his government and has attacked the religious institutions, more specifically the Roman Catholic Church. Whenever the media reported discontent with his rule, he attacked back saying the media is being bribed to speak negatively about him. Every week he speaks to his supports in a nationally broad casted program called "Alo Presidente", in which he talks politics about his policies, sings, dances and curses out his opponents.

Chavez rode to power in 1998 on the promises of Reform and great prosperity and promised to put the country back in track with social, economic and political progress. After over a decade of rule by him (with one election so far), Hugo Chavez is now looking to change the constitution so that he may remain in power on the hopes of the poor that support him. With the recent Russian arms deals, Hugo Chavez will spend over 1 billion dollars in planes and helicopters alone and get over 100,000 AK-47 rifles for his army.

Now a decade after he took power and with still 4 more years left of his presidency, he seeks to expand power of his presidency and abolish his term limits. Almost over 40% of the country is still economically under the poverty line and the gap between the rich and the poor have not closed. Chavez has shown recent trend in attacking rich countries and befriending violators of Human Rights and International law as his friends. Completely derailed from his vision of a better Venezuela and drunk on power, Hugo Chavez is on a course that will destroy Venezuela's diplomatic and international reputation. He is digging the his own grave and the people's conditions are not getting better. Only time will tell what results his madness will earn.
