World Cup 2010: Team USA Profile

Karen Gros
The United States World Cup Team is poised to compete in the 2010 World Cup Championships to be held in South Africa. The championship games will begin on June 11, 2010 at various locations in South Africa. Team USA is coached by Bob Bradley, and qualified in first place in the six team phase, which included North and Central America, and the Caribbean Zone.

Bradley was named the 2009 National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee and is credited for leading the U.S. World Cup Team to a win over Spain in the semi-finals in last year's competition. Spain was a big favorite to win the Cup in 2009. The U.S. ended up losing to Brazil by a score of 3-2.

The U.S. World Cup Team, ranked No. 14 overall, will be in Group C for the 2010 Championships, along with England, ranked No. 9, Algeria, ranked No. 28 and Slovenia, ranked No. 33.

The U.S. team will see its first action on June 12, 2010 when they face England at Royal Bafokeng. The next game for Team USA will be on June 18, 2010 against Slovenia at Ellis Park.

One disadvantage for Team USA will be an injury to Michael Bradley, who broke his nose during practice and undergoing immediate surgery on March 24, 2010. Bradley plays the position of midfielder and is the son of coach Bob Bradley.

Landon Donovan, also a midfielder, will be the key player to watch on Team USA, as he holds the record for the all-time number of goals in the US at 42. He also holds the record for the highest scorer in MLS playoffs with 17 goals. Donovan won the U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2009, his third in his career and a consecutive back to back win. Donovan is fast on his feet and has the experience needed to lead Team USA to a World Cup Championship.

Other key players for Team USA are Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, and Marcus Hahnemann, the goal keepers for the team.

This will be sixth consecutive World Cup final appearance for Team USA in South Africa this year. The USA team has participated in a total of nine World Cup Finals. Their best team effort came in 1930 in Uruguay when they finished in the semi finals stage in third place.

Good luck, Team USA!

Better check your sources! Kasey Keller has not played for the U.S. National Team in several year. Howard, Hahnemann and Brad Guzan are the keepers for the U.S. 2010 World Cup team.
    Nice reporting...

Yes - but I always think that we don't deserve to win as we have no passion for soccer like every other nation in the WC does. Same reason I was glad that Canada won the Olympic hockey.

Hello Karen! I did not realize we had been in such a slump... 1930 was our best? Ouch! Hope you are having a wonderful spring! :)
