"World Famous" Meers Burger of Oklahoma Gets Acclaim from National Magazine

The Oft Honored Restaurant and Its Burger Gain Another Honor

Becky Smith
In the Wichita Mountains of Southwest Oklahoma there is a ramshackle building that has an exterior covered with rusty old signs and other paraphernalia. But while it might not look like much from the outside, on the inside you will find a hamburger that was recently named one of the top 3 burgers in America by Bon Appetit magazine.

The Meers Store and Restaurant, often referred to as the "world famous" Meers Store and Restaurant was featured on the Food Network special "America's Best... Best Places For American Eats From Steak to Pizza" on Saturday August 18. The store's owners and staff are giddy about the honor, but it is not the only one the restaurant has received this year. Meers was also named by Travelocity as one of their "Local Secrets, Big Finds for 2007.

The recognition does not stop there either. The Meers Store and Restaurant has the honor of being listed in the recent New York Times best seller "One Thousand Places to See in the U.S.A and Canada Before you Die." It was named a must-visit location and the Tulsa World has voted the Meersburger as the "Best Burger in Oklahoma."

While making a visit to the historical restaurant, diners can indulge in one of the world-famous Meersburgers, which is the size of a dinner plate. Actually it is 7 inches in diameter and made from Texas Longhorn beef that is raised on the family ranch belonging to Meers owner Joe Maranto. While you are there you can peruse the pictures on the wall of some of Meers most famous diners and check out their seismograph, installed in 1985 by the Oklahoma Geological Society, which monitors the Meers fault, a 15-mile long crack in the Earth's crust.

The store is all that is left of a mining boomtown that prospered from 1901- 1905 during the gold rush days at the turn of the century. At its high point, Meers was a bustling little community with grocery stores, doctors, a café, a post office and an estimated population of 500 people with grit, and a determination to find their fortune in gold.

Burgers are not the only delicious food you can have at Meers. Their down home menu also offers steaks, barbecue, and home baked bread, as well as dessert. They are open for breakfast as well and serve mouth-watering Southern favorites such as dry cured ham, their special sausage, thick sliced slab bacon, pancakes, biscuits and gravy.

Their special Longhorn beef, which is free of antibiotics, pesticides, and growth hormones, is available for sale in their deli case, so customers can take it home and make their own burgers.

The Meers Restaurant and Store is located in the heart of the Wichita Mountains on Hwy 115. To get there from I-44 take the Hwy 49 exit and travel west about 4 miles, turning onto Hwy 58. Travel north for approximately 5 miles and watch for the signs for the Meers turn off. Traveling west for another 4 miles will put you right at the doorstep of the home of one of the best burgers in America.

My first time going to Meers was in 1975, when another minister and I were holding a revival in Lawton. The pastor's wife and another couple took us to Meers. My friend ordered the Meers burger. I said I would have a cheese burger. The owner (an elderly man and his wife) said "do you want a cheese burger, or a Meers cheese burger?" I asked what the difference was, and he said that the Meers cheese burger was "a little larger". I ordered the Meers. I was absolutely shocked when they brought a dinner plate out with the burger and it filled the plate. It was cut into 4 pieces. He told me that was the only thing they served. Sometime later, I took my wife and sons, to find a line of people, new owners, and new menu. Both times were memorable, but the first time was unforgettable.

My family and I drove from Piedmont, OK because we have heard such great things about this place.....SUCH a wasted trip! After driving two hours we get there and have to wait another hour in line and then another hour and a half to get our food after we ordered! Our waitress couldn't even keep our drinks filled and by the time we got our food our burgers were soggy and I couldn't even choke down one bite of an onion ring it was so nasty. We ate it because we were starving by the time we got our food! They only have ONE bathroom and you had to wait in line for that too! I would never recommend this place to anyone ever!

My boyfriend Jeff took me to Meer's for my first time this past Sunday, All in all it was a great place , The old rustic style just added to the charm of it all , not to mention the burgers was really good. Looking forward to going back soon with the kids.

Meers was the worse burger I have ever had. Me and my family are stationed at Fort Sill and heard nothing but how GREAT their burgers are. We get there and they are greasy and rancid. I don't know if they used to be the greatest but I just ate there last month and it was horrible. By far the worse burger I have ever had.

I too, a a native of Lawton. The article on Meers is right on target. The food is fantastic. The service is great and it is my favorite place to go when I'm "home." The nearby Holy City of the Wichitas is another place you don't want to miss. This all makes me homesick!

Well%2C Meers is a famous attraction in Lawton%2C but be forewarned. I am not a picky eater or a restaurant snob%2C but Meers is the worst restarant I%27ve ever been to. There are flies everywhere%2C the service is VERY slow%2C the bathrooms are beyond run-down and disgusting. The ceilings have never been finished. The whole place is a big mess. The meat in the burger IS good and the toppings are a great mix%2Cbut that%27s it. The size of the burger is not that stupendous and the rest of the sides%252FBBQ offered is average at best. Go if you just want to say you went there%2C but don%27t expect great things. Hope this helps%21
