Taliban moving in on Kandahar, Afghanistan

The Taliban may dominate, once again, the Afghan city of Kandahar. Fighting against the Taliban will pose a difficult task for Afghan officials after devastating attacks against the city have left the people fearful and in poor spirits. United States and Canadian troops capabilities are overstretched and it is damaging any possibility for progress in the war. Kandahar, which was the Taliban headquarters prior to United States invasion, seems to be coming under the Taliban stronghold. Controlling the city streets after dark and attacking civilian populated areas, all residents feel unnerved and concerned about their safety. Increased numbers of United States troops in Afghanistan will take place this year, with 21,000 troops intended to take on the Taliban. Until now, the United States course of action in Afghanistan emphasized troop presence in the country side. Focusing on the city of Kandahar and the nearby areas that once served as Taliban stomping ground will be vital to making a strong stand against Taliban militants.

Auschwitz Blueprints Handed Over to Israel

Israeli leader, Benjamin Netanyahu encourages anyone who believes that the Holocaust is a myth to visit Israel to see the blueprints of the Nazi death camp. The documents, verified by the German federal archive, were discovered in an East Berlin apartment and passed on to Bild newspaper. Kai Kiekmann, Bild editor, later gave the documents to the state of Israel. His intention was to allow as many eyes as possible to see the blueprints. Netanyahu compared the tragedy of the Holocaust to the current Middle East conflict, contending that the anti-Jewish state and anti-Jewish people expressions are similar to that of the Nazi barbarians. Iranian President Ahmadinejad has been very outspoken against the state of Israel and calls for the destruction of the state and the Jewish people.

Eighty-Eight Troops Killed in Afghanistan in July and August

Eighty-eight United States troops have been killed in Afghanistan this July and August. With over 60, 000 American troops in Afghanistan, more and more roadside bombs are being used against U.S. troops. Increased violence has led General Stanley McChrystal to urge the U.S. to think about the war in Afghanistan from a different perspective. Thinking about the war from the villagers' standpoint, he asserts, will help the troops more effectively fight the insurgents.

Australia's Ruthless Heat Wave

Australia is in the midst of a massive heat wave. The country is experiencing record heat this summer with temperatures 37 degrees Fahrenheit above average. This breaks the previous record which stood since World War II times. This summer has been especially brutal, catapulting the temperature even along the Australian coast. Currently the country's northeast and center regions are experiencing drought and firestorms have plagued the state of Victoria, killing 173 people. This year's El NiƱo weather is not bringing relief to this heat-stricken country. Instead, the country will be left with less than average rain fall and hotter than average weather.

These were great choices. I liked the one about the Auschwitz blueprints. Nicely done.
