Going into the 2009 World Series, fans hoped for the first classic Fall Classic in a long time. Since two straight Game 7s in 2001 and 2002, the most recent championship rounds have come up short on drama. After Florida shocked the Yankees in six in 2003, there have been three sweeps and two five game matches in the most recent World Series's.
At this time last week, most everyone projected the Yankees-Phillies series to go to a Game 6 or 7. But after this weekend, it looked like the Yankees would finish it off in five, in the latest early World Series ending. However, the Phillies have managed to take it to a World Series Game 6 2009, and have designs on going one game further.
The 2009 World Series probably should have gone to Game 6 a lot easier, since the Phillies were in position to win Game 3 and 4 at a few points. The Yankees used big hits and big Phillies mistakes to put the defending champions on the brink, but couldn't close the door last night.
For the first World Series Game 6 in six years, the Yankees are still favored to finish things off eventually. There are new questions over whether Andy Pettitte can win on three days rest tomorrow - and for a Game 7, there would be questions over who the Phillies would start. But most everyone, except New York fans, hope to see a World Series Game 7, after years of lopsided championship rounds.
Thus far, the Yankees-Phillies 2009 World Series has been a big winner for fans and for ratings, with five close games, and big plays in each of them. If the Phillies take it to Game 7, despite all the odds against them, the World Series Game 6 2009 would be a mere prelude to the most anticipated baseball game in eight years - Game 7 in New York on Thursday. And even that could be vulnerable to snow showers - the last thing missing in this crazy World Series.
Yet the Phillies still have to win the World Series Game 6 first, and even if Pettitte isn't at his best, Philadelphia still has a lot to overcome. The action returns to the Bronx - along with Pedro Martinez - at 7:57 p.m. est tomorrow on FOX.
