World Series Winning Walk Off Hits

Every boy who has ever picked up a glove has dreamed of winning the World Series with a game winning hit - preferably a home run. Well for a small group of men that dream became a reality - 9 men have won the World Series in their team's final at-bat with a base hit. Here is a look at this unique fraternity, starting with the first one.

Earl McNeely - 1924 Washington Senators vs. New York Giants (Game 7). With the score tied in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Senators load the bases with nobody out. Earl McNeely hits a ground ball to 3rd Baseman Fred Lindstrom; the ball takes a bad hop and Muddy Ruel scores the winning run.

Bing Miller - 1929 Philadelphia Athletics vs. Chicago Cubs (Game 5). In game five of the series, Cubs pitcher, Pat Malone, is cruising along with a 2-0 two hitter entering the ninth inning. But with one out, Max Bishop singled and Mule Hass homered to tie the score. With two outs Al Simmons doubles and Jimmie Foxx is intentionally walked. Bing Miller than doubles scoring Simmons and the A's win the series 4 games to 1.

Goose Goslin- 1935 Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago Cubs (Game 6). In the ninth inning of game 6, Goose Goslin, singles in Mickey Cochran with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the series for the Tigers 4 games to 2. The Cubs had a chance to pull ahead in the top of the ninth, when Stan Hack led off with a triple. Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges gets out of the jam giving the Tigers a chance to win in the bottom of the inning.

Billy Martin - 1953 New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers (Game 6). Facing elimination in game six, the Dodgers tie the game in the top of the ninth inning at three. But in the bottom of the inning, Hank Bauer leads off with a walk, Mickey Mantle reaches on an infield single and Billy Martin singles to center scoring Bauer with the winning run. Billy Martin hit .500 in the series and drove in eight runs.

Bill Mazeroski - 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees (Game 7). For the first time in World Series history, game seven of the World Series is decided on a game winning home run in the ninth inning. In a wild game, the Yankees and Pirates battle back and fourth all day. The Pirates take the lead with 5 runs in the bottom of the eight only to see the Yankees tie it up again in the top of the ninth. But Bill Mazeroski fulfills every boy's ultimate dream by hitting the game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Pirates win the series 4 games to 3.

Gene Larkin - 1991 Minnesota Twins vs. Atlanta Braves (Game 7). In one of the greatest pitching duals in World Series history, game 7 is scoreless after 9 innings. In the bottom of the ninth inning Dan Gladden of the Twins leads of with a single and is sacrificed to second. The next two batters are walked intentionally, setting the stage for pinch-hitter Gene Larkin who hits the ball over a drawn in outfield to score Gladden with the winning run. The Twins win the game 1-0 and the series 4 games to 3.

Joe Carter - 1993 Toronto Blue Jays vs. Philadelphia Phillies (Game 6). For the second time the World Series is won on a walk off home run. In game six the Phillies were winning 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth after rallying from a 5-1 deficit. In the bottom of the ninth the Blue Jays got two runners on with one out when Carter hit the game winning home run. The Blue Jays win the series 4 games to 2.

Edgar Renteria - 1997 Florida Marlins vs. Cleveland Indians (Game 7). The Indians were winning 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning of game seven. The Marlins rally to tie the score on Craig Counsell's sacrifice fly to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Renteria hits a two out single just passed the glove of pitcher Charles Nagy scoring Counsell with the winning run. The Marlins win the series 4 games to 3.

Luis Gonzalez - 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Yankees (Game 7). The Yankees have a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning with Mariano Rivera on the mound the greatest closer in post-season history. Mark Grace leads off with a single, Damian Miller lays down a bunt that Rivera throws away at second base for an error. Jay Bell than tries another bunt but Rivera pounces on it and gets the lead runner at third for the first out. Tony Womack than slaps a double to right field to score the tying run. Craig Counsell is than hit by a pitch setting the stage for Luis Gonzalez. With the infield in Gonzalez hits bloop single to center scoring the winning run as the Diamondbacks win the series 4 games to 3.
