World War Z by Max Brooks - a Zombie Book Review

Walter Kovacs
World War Z by Max Brooks is a fantastic book. I only read it because all my friends from camp read it. But once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. It starts off when the first case of African fabies (which is what everyone called it before they knew what it really was). In Africa, a small boy comes back from fishing. His father, who he went fishing with, was nowhere to be found. He came back crying, telling his mother that a fish had bitten him while he was swimming. He told the people of the village that his father was pulled underwater by hands that extended from under the water. He dove in to save his dad but was bitten by a "Fish."

He died later that week. He was put into the tomb of his village, but when they came back the day after he died, the door was open and he was gone. Later that day, the police found him. They quarrantined him to a small tool shed, but the damage had already been done. He had bitten 8 other members of the village. They all died that day.

When a doctor was called in to inspect all the quarrantined animated corpses, he went in to view the first little boy. The boy had been Zip-Tied to the wall. When the doctor came in, the boy lunged at him. Two of the men from the village had to restrain him. The doctor checked for a pulse. There was none. The boy lunged again, this time ripping off his rotted arm in the process. The men all ran.

This is how the book begins, and the way it ends is even more gripping. The book is a series of interviews with the survivors of WWZ (as it has come to be called). Each person has their own story, completly different from anyone else's, but when all the stories are put together in this order, the story of the 12 years war unfolds.

I would rate this book a 10 out of 10. It has action, personality, and originality. There is no other book in the world like it to date. If you want some gripping action, read this.

P.S. It gets a bit graphic, so if you don't want visions of suggarplums and headless zombies in your heads, don't pick this one. I don't reccommend it for anyone under the age of 14, considering there a consistantly a lot of long words, and a lot of nasty 4 letter ones too.
