World of Warcraft: Introduction to Playing Shaman

Class Overview and Tips for Beginners

Introduction

In the hands of a skilled player, the Shaman class can be very useful to have in a group, and are excellent support in a raid setting. At earlier levels Shamans can be classified as jack-of-all-trades support characters: they do not deal as much damage as offensive casters or fighters, and do not heal as much as other defensive casters. At maximum level Shamans tend to focus on either healing, melee DPS, or offensive casts; but retain the ability to perform all three roles at a reduced efficiency. This versatility is what sets the Shaman apart from other classes.

Group Play

Shamans also shine in groups, as they can change roles instantly to suit the situation at hand. For example, if a melee DPS in your group dies you can fill the void; or if your healers are being overwhelmed by damage you can step up and heal to take some of the pressure off of them. Shamans also have the ability to create totems on the battlefield. Totems are stationary objects that grant buffs to your entire group, or debuffs to the enemy; provided they are in range of the totem. Shamans can lay four totems down at a time, which vary greatly in effect. Proper totem placement is an essential part of playing Shaman well, and so is communicating with group members and making sure they stay in totem radius whenever possible.

Mana Management

As a Shaman, you must know how to properly manage your mana pool. Shaman spells are not as mana efficient as other casters as the Shaman is a hybrid class. If you expend all of your mana casting heals and have to wait for your mana to regenerate, fill the downtime by contributing DPS through melee or ranged weaponry. Knowing when to change roles as a Shaman is essential to playing one properly, as that is the main feature of the class.

Profession Choice

As for your primary and secondary professions, Alchemy and Herbalism are good choices for your primary. Alchemy will allow you to craft your own mana potions which will relieve some of your mana management issues. Fishing makes a good secondary profession, as materials gained through fishing can be used with Alchemy to create potions.

Early Game Goals

When starting out as a Shaman prioritize getting your earth and fire totems as early as possible, and also make sure to always learn new spells when they become available. Once you've achieved level 10, develop a rough plan for the style of Shaman you would like to play. While Shamans are jack-of-all-trades characters, they will still have a slight focus to either melee DPS, offensive casting, or defensive casting. Which of these roles you choose will determine what talents you'll select as you continue advancing in levels.
