World of Warcraft: How to Use a Level 55 Death Knight for Income

Making Gold Without the Hassle of Quests

Eric Cromwell
If you already have a Death Knight class character you may want to try this on a different realm. You can only have one Death Knight per realm, per account. It's actually quite easy to make money quickly as a Death Knight. This guide will be written assuming you are new to World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King but not new to WoW itself. There will be a bit of a learning curve for those that really are new to the Death Knight class, so I will include some starter tips to make your gold collecting experience a bit more streamlined.

Starting out, you will begin with a brand new Death Knight in the Acherus. The Acherus is a flying base of operations for the Lich King that is parked over the Scarlet Enclave. You will need to do the beginning quests to buff your new Death Knight up a bit to enhance your damage rate. It's important, simply because the tougher you are the less you'll die and the less time you'll waste running back to your body. So at this point follow the quest chain through the Acherus to get yourself armed. After Getting your rune-blade you will be sent back to the Lich King who will tell you to use the Eye of Acherus to spy on the Scarlet forces. You only need to right click on the glowing orb next to the Lich King to activate the eye. Once in control of the eye use the Siphon of Acherus over the Keep, Blacksmith, Town Hall, and the Chapel in the north west. You don't even need to be at ground level you can hover well above the rooftops and still use the siphon ability without ever taking a shot.

After completing the handful of quests in the Acherus you'll be given orders to go down to the surface to aid Prince Valanar. Continue to follow the quests from here. The enemies are still a bit low in level at this point and don't spawn fast enough or yield enough to be worth farming. Proceed up through the quests until you enter the Realm of Shadows portion. This is one of the three main phases of the start zone where money flows easiest. This isn't the best spot however. That comes a bit later. The opportunity that there is lies in the weakness of the Shadowy Tormentors. They die relatively easy and have an OK drop rate for Runecloth. During this phase you have access to enemies that drop auction-able items within a few feet of a mailbox. The almost negligible travel time makes this a usable spot to farm but I think it is still a lot slower than some other places in the enclave. The main problem is the Dark Riders hit like a truck so you will have to put up with dying for a bit till you level once or twice to really get some fast kills going. You can also do the same thing on the "living" side with the Scarlet troops who don't hit nearly as hard but then you have to deal more with other players, NPC Death Knights and the annoying horse master.

One of the key things when farming, which is virtually the only way to make money in a game, is to cut down on dead time between kills, travel time to and from quest givers and deaths. Whether you are farming by doing daily quests or killing NPCs you are still just grinding away at a mechanism to generate virtual currency. You just have to be fast and find a good balance. The Realm of Shadows works but is not the best balanced for farming right away so you may have to stick with it till you can trounce them easily. After you fill your packs with greens and the occasional blue or epic world drop you simply walk over to the mailbox and send it to yourself. This is where you can really make a lot of gold. The exact amount depends on your realms market and your auction house savvy but I made a couple thousand a day without very much effort selling enclave drops.

The cloth is the mainstay of your income in the enclave but you will also get 12 to 14 slot bags, epic trinkets, a lot of greens and some blue pieces here and there. If you already have some items or gold and wish to invest in the endeavor you can purchase some AH equipment that is better than the starting Death Knight gear and give yourself a boost by mailing it to your Death Knight and re-equipping them.

If you don't like the weakened state of your Death Knight at this point you can progress to the next phase that still allows rapid gold earning. Try not to waste your time dawdling at the breach anymore. At this point progress past Gothik and An Attack of Opportunity till you get up to either the Crypt of Remembrance or Ambush at the Overlook. The ambush quest is the optimal point to be at to farm the enclave. The Makeshift Cover item that Orbaz gives you is a player activated spawn. You click it and get a humanoid to kill. It has a 30 second cooldown so that means you get 2 per minute and it takes about 20 seconds or less to kill him. There is very little down time and if you add multiple accounts to the equation you can rake in quite a bit of loot. The drops are good for the level and he also has a decent rate for dropping Runecloth. This particular item only requires you be standing in the Overlook to use it. Your main decision is, do you want to run around farming the troops or stand in one spot farming the courier. The courier is arguably steadier than hunting down troops in the keep. Just do not turn in the Ambush at the Overlook quest until you have earned enough money to satisfy you or you will have to start over. There is no loot or kill XP available after you return to the Acherus after the quest chain in the inn ends.

On a side note however there is a secondary farming spot that targets the level thirty something crowd available to you also. The citizens of Havenshire that congregate around the town hall have a very high drop rate for mageweave cloth and thirty something green items. You can still get to this spawn up to the end of the inn quest chain. The practical maximum level you can obtain in the enclave is level 64. If you want to stay for 10 years and farm the rare level 57 elite you can get to 65. Even if you aren't entirely into grinding for gold the XP is nice compensation for staying a bit longer and the gold you do earn should be quite sufficient to get you your first flyer right from the time you leave. So good luck with your gold earning.
