In World of Warcraft there are two types of pets available. Some player characters have the ability to use combat pets that will assist you in battle and there are some items that will summon combat companions for a short period of time. Then there are the companion pets, also called vanity pets or collector pets, which do not help in battle but sometimes have interesting and unique attributes that make them fun to have. In World of Warcraft, dragon whelps are possibly the most popular class of companion pet to obtain. There are other classes of World of Warcraft pets that are more highly sought after but they often require an out-of-game event or in-game holiday event to acquire. The World of Warcraft dragon whelps cross over into both methods of collecting.
