World's Biggest Easter Eggs, Giant Chocolate Easter Bunny Break Records

Carol Bengle Gilbert
It may not seem very Easter-like, but the world's biggest chocolate Easter bunny is a replica of the Duracell rabbit- the commercial rabbit associated with selling batteries. In March 2010, South African artist Harry Johnson sculpted the behomoth bunny from three tons of chocolate. The creation consumed three days of Johnson's time and the resulting Easter Bunny stands 12 feet, 5 inches tall.

The Duracell Easter Bunny's 3 ton weight trumped the previous Guinness record holder for the world's largest Easter Bunny by two-tenths of a ton. Brazil claimed the record for largest Easter bunny before speed-sculptor Johnson swooped in for a steal with the energy of the Duracell rabbit.

Johnson had an edge when it came to claiming the record even though he had never sculpted in chocolate before. He is known as the world's fastest sculptor.

When it comes to the world's biggest chocolate Easter egg, it should come as no surprise that Belgium, renowned for its fine chocolate, has maintained the record since 2005. The egg weighs 1200 kg. If you're quick with metric conversions, you know that 's about 4,300 pounds. Imagine an Easter egg weighing as much as a minivan! The world's largest chocolate Easter egg is 27 feet, 3 inches tall. Its construction required 525 hours of labor by 26 master chocolatiers during an 8-day period. The giant Easter egg is comprised of 50,000 Guylian praline chocolate bars.

Belgium wrested the record for world's largest chocolate Easter egg away from previous holder South Africa.

When it comes to giant Easter eggs that aren't edible, look to Vegreville, Canada for the record holder. Vegreville's celebrated 18 foot egg stands 31 feet tall when its support is taken into account. The massive Canadian Easter egg is decorated in the Pysanky style typical of the Ukraine and pays tribute to Ukrainian settlements once found near Edmonton.

I don't want to think about the mess leftover if these giant chocolate creations melt.
