World's Largest Chicken BBQ: Lancaster Pennsylvania, Sertoma Club Chicken BBQ

It's Time for the 56^th annual Sertoma Club Chicken Barbeque at Long's Park, Lancaster Pennsylvania. The gates for this event open at 10 am and close at 6 pm for the Chicken BBQ that is. Save yourself a dollar by getting your ticket at any local Turkey Hill Mini Market or member of the Sertoma Club. Otherwise you will be paying full price for your chicken dinner which this year is $9.00.

This year's meal includes a ½ chicken, Herr's potato chips, banana, Pepperidge Farms dinner roll, Turkey Hill drink, 3Musketeersbar, and Turkey Hill ice cream. They thought of everything including your dinnerware utensils, napkin and salt and pepper. You need only bring yourselves and your ticket, or plan to purchase one in the park to enjoy some of the best chicken you will ever taste. For many Lancaster County natives, the traditional Sertoma Club Chicken Barbeque marks the beginning of the summer season and is a symbol of the fun to come. It is Lancaster's prelude to the Memorial Day weekend.

The Sertoma Club will be making over 30,000 complete chicken dinners. You can enjoy your dinner under a shade tree or down at the Lake in the park. If you are in a hurry, they have a drive-thru lane so that you can take you dinner home. If you want to avoid some of the traffic, you can slip into the park by foot by going through the Park City tunnel opening.

With the money raised from the event, the Sertoma Club proudly donates 80% of its profit towards the upkeep and beautification of Long's Park. In 2008, the Club donated over $100,000 which enabled playgrounds and jungle gyms to be built, specialty playgrounds to be built for blind and handicapped children, renovations of the restrooms, care and feeding of the animals in the petting zoo and general maintenance through out the park. In addition to park centered events, the Sertoma Club helps with Naturalization Day Dinners twice a year for new citizens, the Christmas party for County hospitalized patients, special speech and hearing projects, and Kids Kamp (a summer camp and other programs held throughout the year for at risk youths). These are just some of the many projects with which the Sertoma Club helps.

The Sertoma Club of Lancaster has been holding chicken BBQs since 1953. The club is part of an international civic group. The goal of the group is to provide SERvice To MAnkind. The main mission of Sertoma International is to help speech and hearing impaired children. The first BBQ was held the year after the club was chartered. "Over the following 50 years, the event has grown to such proportions that it has been listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest one-day chicken BBQ".
