World's Youngest Premature Baby Survives

Katherine M.
Amillia Sonja Taylor was only 10 ounces and 9 ½ inches long when she was born October 24, 2006. Her mother had only been pregnant for 21 weeks and 6 days. This is the shortest gestation period ever recorded where the fetus survives. Normal pregnancy lasts around 40 weeks so this tiny Florida baby is most definitely considered a miracle to have lived. Before Amillia's birth the youngest surviving preemies were born at 23 weeks.

Amillia is preparing to come home with her parents, Eddie and Sonja Taylor, on Tuesday. She is expected to do well and thrive even after her severely premature arrival in the world. She is still on oxygen but is drinking well from a bottle and gaining weight at an acceptable pace. She now weighs in at 4 ½ pounds and is 25 ½ inches long. Even after almost 4 months in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) this preemie baby is much smaller than the average newborn.

Doctors were not optimistic after little Amillia's early arrival which occurred after a very careful cesarean section birth. She was just too tiny and in many instances a baby born this early is not given life saving care as the chances are so small that they will survive. Luckily for this baby, hospital staff did put her immediately on oxygen and into an incubator. She has continued to surprise and amaze those who have cared for her as she pulled through when no one expected her to. She did have some respiratory problems which are common with premature babies as well as digestive issues. She had a mild brain hemorrhage which is often the biggest concern but she overcame it and none of these problems will likely affect her in the long run.

Premature babies often have breathing problems but this is usually helped with oxygen and breathing machines. Issues with brain development or fluid build up, hemorrhaging ECT. Is the more serious side effect when birth comes too early. Often when these micro-preemies (born before the 28 week) survive, they may have developmental delays and possibly severe disabilities that may be hard to overcome as they grow older. Other less severe issues with premature births include feeding/digestive problems, inability to maintain their own body temperature and jaundice among other common occurrences. One of the biggest threats to a preemie baby is the threat of contracting a life-threatening infection while in intensive care. Because their bodies are so immature they often lack the ability to fight off sickness and a simple cold or bacterial infection can be too much for them to handle.

MY daughter was 9 weeks early weighing only 3lbs and 9oz she was about 19 1/2 inches long. She does have a minor developmental issues (mostly emotional delays) It could have been worse. The doctors said that because I went in when I did and the ER at the first hospital before transporting me to the other one that had a 3rd level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit they gave me Steroid shots in the thigh. It made her lungs mature faster. I was very lucky to have in the hospital for only 3 1/2 weeks she went home with a big appetite weight just over 4 lbs. She has no breathing problems and she is now taller then me. I can only imagine what those parents they are going through I hope everything works for them.

I was a preemie too at 26 weeks. Another few weeks makes all the difference, as I was over 2 pounds at birth

My son and daughter in-law just lost a little boy at five months, 20-22 weeks and his weight was one pound plus or minus an oz.

What this is telling me is that the hospital should have at least tried to save this baby? Who makes such a call and why?
