Worldwide Day of Giving: How Will You Participate This Year?

Pat Anthony
Most readers are familiar with Reed Sandridge and the Year of Giving. Following his own experience with 365 days of giving, Reed invited others to join his efforts as Kindness Investors.

While the Year of Giving was an adventure Reed Sandridge shared with all of us through his photos and words, the Worldwide Day of Giving will do so much more for those who participate. By being involved on the giving level, readers will experience for one day what Reed did for 365 days.

On June 15th, each person participating in the Worldwide Day of Giving is asked to give a stranger $10. The stranger can be anyone, and does not have to be someone in obvious need. Last year some were surprised by how much they enjoyed giving away the money they had committed to this day.

Giving is thought to be one way to improve health. While many studies have been done on the subject of how health may improve on the part of the giver, the receiver also benefits in ways other than getting money or an item.

The human exchange and how benefits are received by all who are part of the interaction is not always understood, but accepted by most as being of value. Those who have felt their health has improved by volunteering, or giving something of monetary value to others can't always express how they feel better, but know they do.

According to information from John Hopkins Medicine, many adults volunteering in community schools have had improvements in their health. Learn more here.

A recent communication from Reed Sandridge included these details:

Participation is simple and can be done from anywhere in the world. You can sign up on the Year of Giving Facebook Page.

This year the Worldwide Day of Giving takes a slightly different twist. You can:

1. VOLUNTEER

You can volunteer with any organization. For those of you who are busy and can't take off work, consider micro-volunteering on www.sparked.com. Many of the volunteer projects take 20-30 minutes. You can volunteer on your lunch break!

2. GIVE A STRANGER $10

So you're old school? You want to celebrate the Worldwide Day of Giving by paying forward like Reed did for 365 days. It's easy. Find a complete stranger. Approach them and tell them that you are participating in the Worldwide Day of Giving and would like to give them $10. The only rules are that you may not know the person and you may not receive anything in return for the $10 (aside from the rush of goodness you will feel).

Ideally you will take some time to speak with the recipient, find out what they will do with the $10 as well as a little bit about who they are. If you can take a picture or video, that would be even better '" we would love to have you post that here or on the Year of Giving Facebook Page.

3. DONATE $10 TO THE YEAR OF GIVING

Your $10 will be used to help those listed on the Lend a Hand section of the Year of Giving website. Click here to make a donation or go to www.yearofgiving.org.

There you have it....3 simple ways to give back on the Worldwide Day of Giving.

Want to share your giving experience? Leave a comment on www.yearofgiving.org or the Year of Giving Facebook Page

Then sit back and start to watch the phenomenon begin. Stories trickling in from all around the world. Imagine the different reactions and stories that we will collectively have from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to Osaka, Japan to Raahe, Finland to Montevideo, Uruguay!

I encourage you to harness the power of social networking to help us get at least 10,000 people participating. We can do it! Spread the word.

Thanks so much!
Reed

Kindness is contagious.

Good article and suggestions. I do a lot of chipping in to chip-in and even was asked how to return the money when situations improved. I suggested forwarding it to others in need.
