Worst 5 Picks of the First Round; 2010 NFL Draft Review
What? After making several well thought and tactical moves, the Broncos shocked the world in a bad way by selecting Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow. The Broncos have Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, and now a rookie Tim Tebow, none of which have proved themselves as #1 starters in the NFL. I have no clue why the Broncos could have thought this was a good idea. Not only did the Broncos pass up a franchise QB in Clausen, not only did the Broncos pick Tebow much higher than he was projected, the Broncos made a pick of a position that they did not need unless they truly believe Tebow could be a franchise Quarterback for many years to come. Denver set themselves back with this pick. Unless Orton or Quinn are ready to be dealt for a day two draft pick, the Broncos made one of the worst moves of the last several years in the NFL Draft.
#2. Tyson Alualu, DT, California (Jacksonville pick #10)
A stunning pick, but unfortunately the second most shocking of the first round. Many saw Alualu falling out of the first round. Jacksonville needed wasted a top ten pick even if they feel Alualu was the man for their franchise. A trade to the lower teens would have still landed Alualu and a late second or third round pick at the least. If the Jaguars wanted to pull off a shocking reach, they should have went for Tebow, at least he would have cold tickets. This move will not help the Jaguars sell tickets, which should be top on their priority list (right after winning of course).
#3. CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson (Buffalo Bills pick #9)
The Bills made a terrible move here drafting Spiller, who is a very talented but not an every down back. The Bills had absolutely no need for a running back, but jumped at Spiller with great lineman still on the board and with Clausen on the board who could be a franchise quarterback. This pick reminds me of when Atlanta took TJ Duckett after acquiring Warrick Dunn and having Anderson still on the roster. Spiller could be a good pro, but could anyone see him as the next Adrian Peterson? That is the quality of running back you expect out of a top 10 pick.
#4. Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State (San Diego pick #12)
San Diego traded up with little competition for Mathews. Even if they weren't able to find many trading partners, this was a bad move due to the quality of running back not changing much over the first couple of rounds. Even if they liked Mathews a lot, which they did, they could have waited until at least the 20th pick to move up and grab him.
#5. Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech (Denver Broncos pick #22)
I was not impressed with Thomas at the end of the 2010 college football season and against Iowa. Broncos did not want another moody receiver, and that fact is the reason they passed on Dez Bryant, but this was still a stretch. Thomas is speedy but has weak hands and will not come anywhere near replacing Brandon Marshall.

Post a CommentI still do not understand to this day why the Falcons drafted T.J. Duckett in the first round right after they had just signed Warrick Dunn. That was one of the dumbest moves ever. Then soon after that, Duckett gets beat up at a Nelly concert. Who gets beat up at Nelly concert? And what grown man goes to a Nelly concert? By the way, is Duckett in the league anymore?
Good point Steve, but I still think it was a huge risk here. I actually like Danario Alexander better.
You cant judge Demaryius Thomas based on his preformance against Iowa. That was the best D in college football. He will do just fine in Denver.
Denver is a mess. I guess the powers that be told Denver that they would be responsible for picking up Tebow's first round salary. I get it; the kid generated tons of money for college football and deserves to be paid, but to give up their second, third, and fourth-round picks to get quarterback who can't throw and will probably wind up dividing the locker room is madness. Well Denver, I suspect Sarah Palin (wide receiver) will be available by the time you get your next pick.
