Worst Acceptance Speech of the 79th Annual Oscars

Carrie Lowe
Jennifer Hudson who rose quickly to fame after battling against Fantasia Barrino in American Idol, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie Dream Girls with such super stars as Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. While Jennifer Hudson was the underdog from the nominees up against veterans Cate Blanchette and Abigail Breslin, she managed to rise to the top and claim the Oscar on Sunday, February 25th.

While her acceptance speech was mostly wonderful, there was one major glaring fact that I noticed that was missing from her: "Thanks." Where was the thank you for the millions of Americans who voted for her all those weeks she competed in American Idol Season 3? Where was the thanks to the show that allowed her to gain enough recognition to even secure such a roll? Nowhere in her speech did she ever mention the judge's Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul or Simon Cowell, no mention of anyone to do with American Idol at all.

This to me is highly disappointing considering that her entire career is based upon her performance and how she handled the competition. Without the opportunity on American Idol, she would likely still be in Chicago as she was before ever entering American Idol. Now while I do understand that not all actors or actresses have time to thank everyone, it would seem to me that thanking the people of American Idol would have been one of the first acknowledgments that was given.

It is typically customary to thank the people, or group, studio, director, etc who gives you a major break. In this case, her major break came from American Idol, which is rude at best to not acknowledge them. I will admit that she is a highly talented actress and a very good singer, and up against Fantasia Barrino, I would have rather had Jennifer Hudson win. She did manage to beat Fantasia in the race for the role in Dream Girls, which just goes to show her talent.

Few will question her talent, and I am truly excited and happy for her that she won. However, I do feel strongly that she failed the American Idol staff, viewers and people who voted for her and kept her in the competition long enough to rise to recognition. Perhaps as her time in Hollywood lengthens she will have someone kind enough to help her with her acceptance speeches in the future to avoid such blatant disrespect towards the people that put her into the position.

i think she really should have thanked american idol because without that show she wouldnt have even had the opportunity....it is as simple as that. and she knew she had a chance of winning an oscar so she couldnt have been that over whelmed 2 4get 2 thank the show that made her in the first place. but sill, congradulations jennifer hudson!

I don't think she intended to snub anyone; she was probably so overwhelmed by her wins that she simply forgot. I don't know if she was looking at index cards or whatever, but even if she was, being caught up in the moment would make a number of people in the same situation forget something like that. She's young and has all this fame and recognition thrust upon her rather quickly; give her a break already.

Al least she showed up for her acceptance instead of sending a Native American princess in her place...

I've been reading Simon Cowell's comments on Jennifer's acceptance speech. I have to say: I agree with him. She wants to erase American Idol from the slate, but look what amazing opportunities it has created for her. Not to mention, she still has many fans left from that bit. I really think a good publicity manager could really help her with these awkward moments. :)

Jennifer Hudson has a lot to learn about life and about growing up. She's still a young woman and I wish her the best. But she's still a youngster when it comes to career moves. Like any other gig,I'm sure her AI experience was mixed. But, someone needs to take her aside and tell her to 'SHUT UP.' Notice her around Beyonce...regardless of what happens behind the scenes, you must learn to show grace and humility in a career if you expect longevity. When JH accepted the Golden Globe, she didn't even thank her supporting CAST!!! How tacky. She's blackballing herself so no one wants to hear her 2-3 years from now when she's faded into obscurity. LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. Don't blame it on being 'black' or anything else -- blame it on your poor attitude. As someone who watched her on AI, she had a horrible attitude on the show and her voice wasn't that great--she was NO Fantasia! Note to the wise: Be careful of the bridges you burn -- as a novice, you never know when you may have to cross

    American Idol? WTF?
She won based on her performance, not on her status as an Idol contestant. Don't forget, AI booted her out. If it were Fantasia or Kelly Clarkson, maybe. To say she should have thanked AI, you might as well extend it to say she should have thanked her 3rd grade teacher or her pastor or her great grandmother, etc.

    Sheesh.

she thanked her family, the director and cast and she thanked god. those are the big ones to remember. she did throw in jenn. holiday, which was quite appropiate. to call that the worst speech was completely absurd and playa hating. its obvious she was stunned and her mind was racing. if you have time, or can talk fast over a written down speech, you mention the 2 and 3rd level of support. your former teacher, american idol, your agents and managers, your hometown, your record company, clive davis, florence ballard...
to be honest, what i am looking forward to is seeing her as a guest on american idol. thats the real thank you the show deserves.

People please she's only the 4th Afro-American women to win, stop worrying about who she said thanks to and be happy for the fact that she played a great role in Dream Girls and won the Oscar!

She was my pick for worst speech as well. I will cut her a little slack because of her inexperience, but she was the heavy favorite going in so you would have thought she would have been better prepared. I mean this is the moment that will define her career for the next few years to come, and is that the impression she wanted to make? I don't think so.

Spare me! She barely managed to get Jennifer Holliday a shout out (which was FAR more important than thanking AI) before the music cut her off. Clearly she was emotional. I don't have a single problem with her not getting around to mentioning AI. Those that do have clearly never been in a similar situation and are just petty. And I have to LMAO at those that think the producers saw $$ by casting Jennifer Hudson like she was going to be some kind of draw. Revisionist history. In not one of the ads before the movie came out was Jennifer ever shown or mentioned. It was all about Beyonce. The "cashing in" on Jennifer's name only came after her she showed her chops and SURPRISED everyone by overshadowing the known names of the picture. Trust me, the producers didn't see that coming (neither did Beyonce).
