Worst Gifts for Grandparents - and Some of the Best

K-Mart Special Chocolates? Yum?

Grandparents come in such a variety of ages, personalities, degrees of health and with special likes and dislikes. This is directed toward grandparents who are still able to do most things but are just a bit slower than they were. However, they're able with caution to have a great and fulfilling lifestyle.

The worst gifts I can think of include:

1. cheap candy.
2. cheap trinkets.
3. electronic toys or phones without any assistance in how to use them.
4. pets - without their knowledge or consent
5. crafts or projects that are too intense or that could stress grandparents.

Cheap [very cheap] candy and trinkets are only appropriate if a child uses his or her own money and lovingly purchases the gift for the grandparent.

Never give real candles to people with dementia or Alzheimer's as they may forget to blow them out and a fire could result.

If grandparents [or any of us] have some guidance, we can usually "catch on" to new gadgets quite easily. But, if they come in the box with 15 pages of instructions in small type - they will likely just stay in the box.

Never give a grandparent a pet for a surprise. Perhaps they don't want to be responsible for a pet any longer. Many grandparents come and go on a whim and don't want to have to find care for a pet. Some might trip on a small pet if it gets between their legs. Pets can be expensive and pets will die. However, pets are a good thing for any age if circumstances are proper. Consult with grandparents to find out exactly what they do want and that they have considered the impact of caring for a pet 24/7.

Grandparents' favorites include:
A gift card to their favorite - or a very different - restaurant. They could either go themselves or ask friends to join them.

A couple pieces of ultra special chocolate or sweet is a great gift for most grandparents. Even if they should not eat most sweets, a little bit will make them feel good and won't hurt them.

Flowers are often very special. If they dislike plants, have too many already or kill them off quickly, just give them cut flowers. They are a great medicine for the soul. However, they may enjoy watching a plant grow.

Little, easy read books are fun to receive and can be used in the home decor. Or perhaps your grandparents have a special author or type of book they enjoy.

Don't just buy "a little something" because many grandparents have already or will be downsizing their homes. The last thing they would want is more little "things." One small thing, however, that can be a great gift is a framed picture or of something or someone grandparents love.

Consider wrapping your gift very beautifully - as a lovely gifts makes everyone feel they are so special and cared about. Many times the most exciting is just seeing the wrapped gifts.

Yes, grandparents can be very needy or they may have "everything." Your gift of love and a special hug will be appreciated and remembered for a long time. Be sure to accompany your beautifully wrapped gift with a generous hug.

  • Don't surprise them with a pet.
  • Cut flowers can be candy for the soul.
  • Give and then teach them how to use new tech gadgets.
No, grandma doesn't really want that craft project with a thousand pieces, or a pet to care for, or cheap chocolates.
