Would You Elect Jerry Bohler for Mayor?

Details of Past Suit Settlment Agreement Certainly an Issue

Autism-Dad-1
In Canton, Illinois, the upcoming elections are April 7th and we have some local controversy going on for sure. The old Mayor Jerry Bohler is running for mayor again. According to The Canton Daily Ledger He settled a lawsuit claiming sexual harassment by a secretary for approximately $34,000 and in that settlement it was agreed no contact between the two would be made. Well that secretary is still employed in the city building and If Bohler becomes mayor then the no contact clause would be an issue. The city council released the information recently which had been previously kept private and the press asked the local city attorney questions about the issue.

One Alderman completely lost his cool and berated the city attorney for releasing information to the press about the situation. this was not even on the agenda and was uncalled for. The Alderman accused the current mayor of dirty politics for releasing the information. The Alderman was yelling and acting like a child during the city council meeting on Tuesday the 24th of March 2009. The city clerk actually had to crack the gavel repeatedly and tell the alderman to shut up. The alderman is locally known for his hotheaded approach to solving problems. Many people agree with the alderman for the most part, just not his tactics and conduct. He asks good questions and makes good points about issues. Yelling and acting like a child is not very professional and surprised myself my wife and daughter as this was the first council meeting I attended and seen such outrageous behavior. No apology was given after the outburst. The race for mayor is certainly a hot topic here in Canton, IL. The current mayor is accused of being a good ole boy and not caring about the people of canton. His opponent some say was very good as mayor. The question remains though do we want a person who cost this city so much money over a sexual harassment suit in office. I personally say no.

I think that if you do something of this nature and it ends up in court or a settlement arises out of it then you have pretty much opened yourself up to be morally questionable as a public official. Bohler when asked about the issue just says it is a non issue and not relevant and points the finger at the current Mayor Meade as practicing dirty campaign tactics. The heat is sure to continue despite the forecast for snow this Sunday. If you are a politician then you need to have enough moral compass to not get in a situation where your character is seriously questioned. Canton is a predominantly Christian town and this behavior is not condoned by many. The past of Illinois is not great when it comes to crooked politicians and I do not see how Bohler would help change that image.

    Wow you know Canton pretty good. I agree with your comments and i believe a billboard sign was stolen going towards Lewistown as well. Glad to see someone is familiar with canton. Scary to see all the Bohler signs around town.

    Bohler hired Dave Byerly as his economic development guru and paid him top dollar which included an $80,000 annual salary + a $30,000 forgivable house loan (paid out of taxpayer dollars) + large bonuses + a country club membership. Yes the man we all hated from Texas was another example of how Bohler paid top dollar for no results on taxpayers dime. I guess you hire what you know.

    The tear-down of the IH buildings-I will give Byerly credit for one thing and that was starting the tear down of the IH site, this wasnt Bohler. Byerly saw the opportunity to tear the buildings down because steel prices shot through the roof making demolition more cost effective. Thats were Bohlers supporters will say he saved $4 million dollarsbut, again that was Byerlys doing, not Bohlers. But guess what, there still was a hefty cost to demolish and remove the debris.

    6) If you don't know Bohler's campaign supporters ripped off (literally) Meade's billboard sign on IL Route 9 heading to Banner.

    7) Bohler wants to take credit for things that are not really his accomplishments such as:

    Being a member of South Park United Methodist Church? Afraid not. See Carole Painters letter to the editor in the 3/30/09 Canton Daily Ledger. Shes a 12 year parishioner and has never seen Bohler attend.

    The Big Creek Water Park and Senior Center-that project belongs to the Park District. They and the citizens advocating for that project were solely responsible for getting that referendum put on the ballot and passed by the voters. Bohler had nothing to do with it. Meade was actually the chairman of that referendum campaign. If anyone in this city election should get credit it is Meade, not Bohler.

    Paying for expensive city employees-Bohler has proven by his own past record that he has no problem giving out loads of taxpayer money for new city employees.

    Autism-Dad-1: good post. Here are the reasons why I could not vote for Jerry Bohler:

    1) Bohler had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a subordinate employee when he was mayor. This would be grounds for termination in any other private business;

    2) The inappropriate relationship resulted in a settlement agreement that costs the City of Canton taxpayers $34,000; Is Bohler going to pay this money back to the taxpayers of Canton if elected?

    3) Since Bohler filed bankruptcy, there is uncertainty as to whether he can effectively be entrusted to manage over $9 million of citizen tax dollars;

    4) Many who worked for Jerry Bohler under his first regime (term) and at the prison describe his management style as one of fear and intimidation; this is not productive in ANY environment and

    5) Bohler has hired relatives to work for the city; is that really a way to run a government, to hire your family members, cronies, and political hacks?

    6) If you don't know Bohler's
