Would You Want to Learn Your Baby's Gender Before Birth?
Poll Shows Americans Are Divided on the Issue
In the poll conducted in June 2007, Gallup asked nearly one-thousand American adults whether they would want to find out their baby's gender while pregnant or wait until birth. According to the results, 51% of those polled said they would want to wait until birth to find out their baby's gender, 47% would want to find out before birth, and 2% did not give their opinion. The individuals polled were also asked additional questions to help determine if there was something more likely to make them express a certain opinion on the matter. For example, it was found that those who already have children were more likely to want to find out their baby's gender before birth. Young adults aged eighteen to twenty-four were also more likely to make the same decision. The poll also found that certain groups of people are more likely to wait until birth to find out their baby's sex including 63% of Catholics and 56% of people who attended religious services at least once a month.
I have to say that I was honestly shocked by the results of the poll. It's not that there is anything wrong with either decision, because there is not. Regardless of the decision, it is a personal choice. Personally, I only know a handful of people who chose not to find out their baby's gender before birth. In the poll, however, the majority of the people chose to wait until birth to find out their baby's gender. I guess that is why I was so surprised by the results.
For me, I always wanted to find out my baby's gender before birth. I've done so with all three, and I wouldn't change a thing. Although I'm sure it is an amazing feeling to wait until birth and be surprised, I'm rather impatient. On top of that, I'm a planner. I have to have everything bought, the nursery all decorated, and the name picked out before birth. Without knowing the baby's gender, all that planning is hard to do.
Of course, there is no right and wrong answer to this subject. Whatever one decides to do, it is still a personal decision. However, I've always wondered what would happen if one parent wanted to know the gender before birth and the other didn't. Now that's a conundrum!
