Whether from The University of Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M or any other school in the nation, after a whopping, painful loss to OU, the venom spewed against The University of Texas Longhorns Football Team and Coach Mack Brown is nothing short of amazing. So let's take a look at the real record of why this team has remained in the national spotlight
Since 1893, when the University of Texas started playing collegiate football, before the team was even named "The Longhorns" and they were just called "The Varsity", they have been the number 2 most winning team in US college football history.
Amongst many other honors they also:
- · Won 12 national titles
- · Won 32 conference championships
- · Won 25 Bowl games, ranking #2 in overall Bowl appearances and #3 in Bowl wins
- · Were the only team in the nation to have at least 10 wins in one season from 2001-2009
- · Were the only team in the nation to have at least 9 wins in one season from 1998 - 2009
- · Have had 129 players in the All-America Team
- · 17 players and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame
- · Have had 43 First round NFL drafts with 57 former players currently in the NFL
- · Have had 23 "Player of the Year Awards" (Heisman, API, UPI, Maxwell, Walter Camp etc)
- · Coach Mack Brown has also been both the Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd coach of the year
- In 1,212 games played, UT has won 854 times
- UT has won more games against any regular opponent ever played including OU, A&M, Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, Tech, Nebraska, LSU and OSU
- UT has played games against 126 teams and won more games than the opponent 84 percent of the time
Everyone seems to hate The University of Texas and teams in the area gear up for the "big game" against UT, including OU and Texas A&M. Unfortunately for both OU and A&M the record of UT wins doesn't look so great for them on paper. In UT-OU matchups, numbering 106 from the first game which was called a "practice game" against OU, UT has won 59 times, OU 42 times, with 4 ties. Against A&M, total match ups numbering 117, UT has won 75. So much for the big rivalry. Other teams including Texas Tech, Baylor, SMU, University of Houston etc - don't really warrant mentioning as UT has obviously beaten them so many times statistics are hard to find - still they have often considered UT the biggest rival.
So why all the gloating and rancor when UT loses a game, the answer is that everyone hates UT because they want to be UT. They may cite overhandedness with the newly announced Longhorn network, how unfair it is that UT commands and everyone jumps but really that is just jealousy talking.
Yes, the 'horns have had a few bad seasons, it happens in sports - just that when it happens to UT - everyone gloats, very sportsmanlike. This season of football may not meet the UT dream but remember all this when the team is full of seniors and juniors rather than freshman and sophomores.
