Wrap it Up: NBC is UP First

Get Ready. TV Upfronts Are Here

Tim O'Brien
It's Wrap It Up time folks. Who is in and who is out? I'm not talking about the presidential election. Just throwing the question out to start the day.
- Meanwhile, welcome to the TV upfronts. NBC is out of the gate first. Actually, many cable outlets have thrown out the brunt of what they are releasing, but this is for the Big 4. Here's how the press release stated the news from NBC, out of New York.
PRESS RELEASE: NBC has introduced its 2011-12 primetime schedule, showcasing six new dramas and six new comedies from a roster of renowned hit-makers that includes Steven Spielberg, Lorne Michaels, Brian Grazer, Tom Werner, John Grisham and Peter Berg, among many others.
* The season's new dramas are "Smash," "Prime Suspect," "The Playboy Club," "Awake," "Grimm" and "The Firm"; and the new comedies are "Up All Night," "Whitney," "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Free Agents," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent."
* Returning shows include "Parenthood," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Harry's Law,"
"Chuck" (for its fifth and final season of 13 episodes), "Community," "Parks and Recreation," "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Dateline NBC." Among next season's returning alternative series are "The Voice," "The Sing-Off," "The Celebrity Apprentice" and "The Biggest Loser," each in twhour formats.
- If you were wondering why flags are at half staff (May 15), it is for Peace Officer's Memorial Day.
- Are we still in Libya. Hmmm.
- Dump item over the weekend. Israel pretty much overlooked - - again, by media.
- Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann together. Enough said. Let's move on.
- Though the flooding along the Mighty Mississippi is terrible, the folks involved in tourism for Memphis say, their landmarks have not been hurt. Yes, that means Graceland.
- Show the OBL photo but DO NOT release the way the SEALs operate, please.
WEEKEND BO
1."Thor 3D" - $34.5 million
2. "Bridesmaids" - $24.4 million
3. "Fast and Furious" - $19.5 million

Notes: None of the new releases could knock "Thor" out of the top spot so it stays for another week "Bridemaids" landed in second. As the summer movie season launched in May, the weather outside is still struggling with spring, so that "summer movie feel" hasn't hit all over. This week, "Pirates" take to the seas again and this time in 3D. Look for a heavy summer of sharing 3D screens and see if that affects the numbers at all. Is there room enough for all those 3D movies? With only a 47
percent second week drop, "Thor" scored. "Priest 3D" had a lackluster opening but, to be honest, who expected anything else?
- The one thing I never want to be a part of is a "craze." Of any kind.
