Wrestlemania 23 - Batista Vs the Undertaker Blow by Blow

Anthony Morelli
Wrestlemania 23's World Championship event featured World Champion Batista Vs The Undertaker who was 14-0 lifetime in Wrestlemania matches. In the pre-fight fan poll run by the WWE, the undertaker was favored to win by 82% of fans. However, Champion Batista guaranteed a victory and was looking to be the first to defeat The Undertaker in a Wrestlemania match. 10 years ago, The Undertaker won the World Championship at Wrestlemania, and looked to repeat that feat tonight in front of 82000 fans at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan.

Batista entered the stadium and walked uneventfully to the squared circle. Then the lights went out and hooded faceless people entered the stadium holding bright torches. The crowed was completely silent and then the faint sounds of church music could be heard getting louder and louder. Finally the church music quieted and the familiar bells associated with The Undertaker rang which made everyone in the building get up on their feet. The Undertaker made his very dramatic and slow walk down to the ring never losing eye contact with Batista. Signs of "14-1" could be seen in the background.

The match began with The Undertaker taking the left side of the ring with Batista in the right front corner. The ref was in the middle wearing a blue shirt. At the bell, Batista came out hitting hard backing The Undertaker into the back left corner and hitting him with several left and right hand punches. The Undertaker reversed roles with Batista and was beating him in the back left corner when he was distracted by the ref and went to have a conversation with him.

With The Undertaker preoccupied, Batista got his energy back and attacked The Undertaker. The Undertaker managed to get Batista out of the ring and they began to fight outside, each with their mind on the time. Batista could retain the title on a count out, however he claimed he would not do that.

Batista started to dominate the beginning. Outside the ring he slammed The Undertaker's head onto the ring floor. He threw The Undertaker into the steel steps causing The Undertaker to land with a loud thud on the other side of the ring. Batista picked up The Undertaker and threw him into the ring. To put the nail in The Undertaker's coffin, Batista climbed to the top rope and jumped down to The Undertaker, slamming him down to the mat and covering for a 2 count.

The Undertaker recovered and threw Batista out of the ring. To avoid a count out, The Undertaker returned to the ring. Upon returning outside of the ring, Batista was ready for him and slammed him through the announcer's table. The announcers quickly grabbed their things and watched as Batista dominated The Undertaker.

Batista dragged the Undertaker back into the ring and hooked his leg for a long 2 count. The two battled it out for a few minutes, when The Undertaker performed his patented Choke Slam. He covered for a 2 count and Batista came back trying the Batista Bomb twice, but neither time was able to knock out The Undertaker. The Undertaker threw Batista into the far right turnbuckle and followed up with a pile driver, knocking out the champion and winning the match.

The Undertaker became the new WWE World Champion duplicating his victory in Wrestlemania 10 years ago. Batista put up a great fight and became the closest anyone has to beating The Undertaker in Wrestlemania as The Undertaker moved his Wrestlemania record to 15 wins and 0 losses.

It was a battle of character and wrestling capability, and eventually the better character and more resilient wrestler won, because he had a larger arsenal of wrestling moves. Not to mention that the Undertaker at this age and size is much more agile and faster than anybody else in the entire WWE roster, he can still walk the top rope, he can fly through the air jumping vertically over the top rope, give tombstone piledrivers to guys like Mark Henry, choke-slams to guys like Khali, he has the most dominant character and is best at presenting it, he has the greatest respect in the industry which is obvious in his entrance/ theme/ character and Wrestlemania streak, he is the longest tenuring athlete, locker-room leader and mentor/ trainer for other wrestlers including Batista, and he is the only athlete who has never taken performance-enhancement drugs before long and painful matches like this one.
