It all begins with the presentation. While a decent love note can be written on a piece of torn notebook paper, putting a bit more thought into it will take you a long ways. The paper doesn't have to be that romantic, but something unique is good. You might try using a handmade writing paper created from banana leaves, coconut husks, etc.
Using a good ink adds a nice touch as well. Try gold or another metallic color that goes nicely with the paper that you chose. You will want a smooth flowing ink so you don't end up with scribbles and uneven writing as you go.
You should always start with a rough draft, written on plain paper. This lets you do multiple edits before writing out in good the entire letter. Otherwise you are bound to make plenty of mistakes and rethink your phrasing several times before finishing your letter. So, make sure you write out at least one draft, with space between the lines to write new comments.
The greeting should be nice and adoring. There's no reason not to be a bit sappy, since this is a love letter after all! Use your lover's name and at least one loving adjective, such as darling, sweet, or anything else romantic you can think of. You should end up with something like, "My dearest Amy".
Your love letter should start off with your reason for writing this. You can begin with the words "I just wanted to write because/to tell you" and go from there. Write the reason, whatever it is, that inspired you to craft this letter of love. Perhaps you just spent a romantic weekend together and you wanted to let him know how much it meant to you, perhaps you just discovered that you will be having a child together and it has increased the love you feel for her. Or your reason for writing might be far simpler, because her eyes inspire you or maybe you were just thinking of him at the moment.
The main body of your love letter is where you should express your feelings. This might be difficult to do, but just try to describe how you feel. Use metaphors if you need to. For example, you might write something like "Every time I see you, my heart leaps like an antelope" or anything equally romantic. Avoid mentioning intimate body parts, that is a lust letter, not a love letter.
If you aren't sure what to write for the body of your love letter, why not recount how you felt the first time you saw your lover? You could remember in words that first encounter, or how you first knew you were in love. Running back over your love history together is another way to go, or you can focus on a particular event that impressed you (such as that romantic weekend away).
Finish your romantic letter with something about how you can't wait to see your lover again, or something similarly romantic such as "dreaming of you" or "forever yours" instead of a simple "love, Jane". The end of your letter needs to be just as dramatic as the beginning.
One thing to remember as you write is that you should never, ever put anything negative into a love letter. Don't assume that the other person doesn't feel exactly as you do. Avoid saying something like "I'm sure you don't agree" or anything else that isn't positive and loving. Negative statements destroy love letters.
Seal your letter to make sure no one but your lover will be able to see it. If you like, you can make it even more special by including something like dried flower petals or a memento from your first date (such as a ticket stub from the movie, or a pressed flower). Drop this into the envelope so it will fall out when your lover takes out the letter.
By following the steps above, you will end up with a wonderful love letter that ought to impress just about anyone. Remember to open and close with a romantic phrase or adjective and fill the letter with examples of your love. Writing a love letter can take a bit of time, but it is well worth it to see your lover's face after reading it.
