Write Your How To Article Properly

Greg Wendland
Writing How-To articles seems to be popular these days. Everything from home remodeling to changing a light bulb can be found in how-to articles on the internet. The question remains, however, what makes a good how-to article?

Below, the outline of steps necessary to complete the task is displayed. It is important not to overwhelm your reader with a bunch of words on a page. If possible, including pictures is preferred. The key to making the steps clear is to separate them in bulleted fashion. After all, painting by numbers made you feel like you could actually paint, right? This how-to write article, explaining how to write one, will proceed in the same fashion.

Choose your topic

A good topic can be something you are an expert at, such as an old hobby. If the topic is something, you are not an "expert" at, then make sure you research it fully before attempting to write the article. The worst thing that can happen is for you to get your information wrong. Then the credibility of future how-to articles is uncertain.

Verify that your topic is unique

After all, chances are good that what you wish to write about has already been put into writing. If it has been written about before, then you might want to put a unique twist on your article. Keep in mind that almost nothing written today is "new". Therefore, the focus for a writer is to write a thing in a way that has not been told before. Make it humorous. Did anyone not love that show with Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor?

Start writing!

Generally, the first word of each step should start with an action verb. Also, ensure that you use the numbering style so that each section, or step, is clearly marked. Here, bolding has been used for the actual "instruction" as well.

Save detailed information for later

The goal here is to give the reader an easy to follow systematic manual on accomplishing the task. For some, detailed information may not be necessary. However, if there are detailed points you wish to make, put a notation in that step for the reader to jump to a "Tips" or "Warning" section. In this way, the steps become less convoluted with information that may not be needed by every reader.

Re-read your article when you are finished

Fill in any information that you might have forgotten to include while you were first writing the article. The usefulness and accuracy of your information is paramount. Proper spelling of terms that may apply is imperative. You do not want to confuse the reader with mislabeling. The idea is for you to contribute your knowledge. If spelling and grammar are not your strong suit, then have a family member read over your article before you publish.

Avoid copyright issues

If you use material as a reference in your how-to, then by all means, quote that reference. This includes the use of pictures. Never copy and paste unless you have specific permission to do so in writing. That is how to write a How-To article. Now your job is to find the topic.
