Write or Die: The Purpose and How-to of Dr. Wicked's Writing Lab

What is Write or Die?
Write or Die, also known as Dr. Wicked's Writing Lab, is a site used to motivate writers. This site is excellent for every sort of person to use. For example, many creative writers use this site to write their required number of words per day. This site is also is handy for students who have put off writing an essay, or for the businessman who needs to quickly type up a report.

How does it work?
This application lets someone write however many words the want for however long they want. However, if one stops writing, the site will give a reminder to encourage the writer to continue. This makes the application good if one is trying to meet a deadline, or trying to meet one's word quota quickly.

Great! How do I get started?
When on the main screen, the user needs to type in what their word goal is. The user can also enter a time limit if they desire, anything from ten minutes to two hours worth of writing time. Click on whichever 'Grace Period' button works best for you- Forgiving, Strict, and Evil. Last of all, choose which mode you like best. The first mode is 'Gentle.' Whenever one stops writing, a reminder will pop up on the screen, encouraging one to keep writing. This is where the grace period comes into effect- the longer the grace period, the more time one will have to stop and think before the reminder is activated. The writer receives warning, also- after not typing anything the background screen will slowly fade from white to deep red, at which point the reminder is activated. There are four different rreminder modes. In 'Normal' mode, when one stops writing a very annoying noise will start and not stop until one starts writing again. In 'Kamikaze' mode, if one stops writing, the words that have already been written will start to erase themselves! The last mode is 'Electric Shock' mode, which cannot actually be used.

Which options should I choose?
I don't have too much discipline and I like to get things done quickly, so I choose a fairly difficult road. I generally write for a half-hour at a time and try for 1000 words each time. I set my Grace Period at Evil, and my Reminder Mode at Kamikaze. This keeps me from getting distracted or worrying too much about my inner editor. Of course, it is different with everyone- more disciplined people will probably do well with the Forgiving Grace Period and the Gentle Reminder Mode.

In Conclusion...
Write or Die is an excellent tool for writers and businessmen, students, and everyone in between who needs to get a bit of writing accomplished. I also highly recommend this site for breaking out of writer's block, or for help pushing aside one's inner editor. I highly recommend that everyone try out this appliaction.
