Whether you're a successful freelance writer, or aspire to be, there are a few ways to help your writing skill be more in-demand for editors & publishers. And these same few ways will make your writing more profitable for you, too.

In this article I'll let you in on a few ways to market yourself and successfully expand your readership. Because the more readers that know and desire to read your work, the better your career will become.

Get Your Foot In the Door

If you're already writing for Associated Content, great! If not, sign up! Writing for this very site is a great way to show your quality of work, get feedback, and sample different writing styles and subjects. Getting some money for your work doesn't hurt, either!

Get a Blog

If you haven't started your blog yet, what are you waiting for? I run workshops all the time for business owners and writers to help them start a blog. When your audience, and potential future employers can read short samples of your work, they feel like they get to know you. Think about this in your own life, isn't it easier to hand over money or a job to someone you like?

Broadcast Your Talent

When you have a few subjects that you really enjoy writing about and have developed the research and stories on, get the word out. There are a few sites like EzineArticles.com, GoArticles.com and such that you can submit your work, complete with a link to your website and short bio about yourself. They then make your article available for use by others.

Add Another Site

Now that you have some clips & articles to show others, approach other sites you are interested in writing for. Show them your samples, complete with any facts of how many hits your website or your articles have gotten, if the figures would add to your shiny first impression.

Develop a Professional Schedule

Getting in the habit of sending out query letters is a good thing for any professional writer. If you keep a list of who you'd like to work for and why your writing fits with the style of their publication, then you can always pull from that when you don't have current classified ads for writers available.

Writing a query letter, expanding your readership, or seeking new gigs at least weekly will add to the likelihood of you developing regular, paid, work, and not having to be a waiter-slash-writer to pay the bills.
