The first thing that I did was to sign up with Meetup.com and search the database for Memphis groups that were active. I found Memphis Writers Collective, a growing group of writers organized by S.B. Lamb. The group meets at least once a month and encourages various activities, such as, workshops and conferences. What I like about the group, Memphis Writers Collective, is that there seems to be a lot progressive participation and feedback within the group.
I, then, went to Yahoo! Groups and did a quick search and found another writer's group in Memphis, Writers Community. This group was founded in 2004 and meets once a month. The goal of the Memphis based group is to join together, learn, inspire and support each other in their writing endeavors. Members can submit their work for critique and get constructive input from fellow writers.
Another group of writers in Memphis is the Mid-South Writer's Association. This group meets on the Memphis University Campus at 6191 Park Avenue in the Gillespie Hall. The group encourages all aspiring writers to come, bring their work to be critiqued and be apart of the activities. Call 338-8990 or 327-3465 for more information.
Also, a good way to meet other writers in the Memphis area, is to take a creative writer's course. University of Memphis offers 'So You Want To Be a Freelancer,' through the continuing education program. The next class starts on April, 8, 2010, at 7:00 pm, lasts for two hours and only costs $39.00. If you want more information on registration deadlines and exact location, contact U of M at 901-678-6000.
No matter what genre of writing you have chosen, you can benefit from connecting, meeting and networking with other writers in the Memphis area. You will learn the joy and business of writing and how to share your art with others and get published.
