Writers Need Hobbies to Meet People

When your daily routine consists of waking up, dragging yourself to the coffee pot and then promptly to a laptop, you definitely need a hobby. Writers forget that they are people too, and put much of themselves into what they do and not who they are besides being a writer. Great hobbies for writers to explore are photography, board game groups and book groups. These are all low-key and get a writer out of the house into a social environment, which is what anyone who spends all day and night at home needs.

Photography skills are always a plus for a writer. There are many photography groups who share pictures and travel to new places together to share their wisdom and eye with another. If you just need some time to relax, grab a camera and head to the nearest park, where you can practice your skills. Photography always allows a writer to see what they are thinking about in pictures, instead of words, which increases the skill of writing for an audience.

Join a board game group if you want to be around people, but in a relaxed environment. You will experience many people who just want to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere and you can still take your coffee. These are usually held at the same house, but can rotate to be hosted at a new house each week. Spend some time making snacks for the group and they will all want to let you win the game!

Reading groups are wonderful for a writer. I don't know many writers who read, because they are usually always writing. A reading or book group, picks a book and meets every so often to discuss it. This helps writers do something other than write with their free time, and makes them accountable to the group to take a break and read. Joining in the discussions are a great way to meet friends who think like you and debate about opinions with others.

Socializing is sometimes hard for someone who dedicates their life to a writing career, but these low-key hobbies are great to get a writer started in associating with others. Keeping an open mind and relating a hobby to what you write, will always help you transition from work to fun in a unique way. Take your camera and find that next great picture for your article or book!
