Writer's Site Leaves Something to Be Desired

Site Can't Serve Two Masters

Barry Dennis
The following is a copy of en E-mail I sent to the Support Group at a Writer's site. I have removed the identifying information of the people and the Site name, but writers will know who and what I am referring to.
Please keep in mind that this is the Opinion of a frustrated writer who thinks (as maybe we all do) that they have something valuable to offer, and want the opportunity to say it.

I have just submitted the Fifth (?) revision of My title for an article about Cloud Commuting and the potential for 50,000,000 at-home offices; the problems and opportunities and Hundreds of Billions of savings in energy, pollution and similar values in increases in profits for companies, ease of management and worker satisfaction and reduced stress.

Note: All writers think that their work is perfect, except for the"insecures" who wonder why they bothered; "Nobody likes me, they hate me and my talent,.. what a joke!" And on and on. Occasionally, at dawn, in the middle of a thousand-yard-stare, they may momentarily consider that maybe, just maybe, that phrase, that paragraph, that article could be improved...and some do it. Writing, revisiting, rewriting, changing perspective; a thousand things.

As a writer one said, "Who is the harder taskmaster? The cold-eyed editor, or the muse that goads me?

I said to ************** and I say to you as a "team," the focus on the commercial aspects of your site at the expense of the very writers who feed your "product line" will, if not right away, then in the long term, kill your site, bury it, kick dirt on the grave and leave it unmarked, ignominious, unknown and unwanted.

I happen to know a little about Marketing and business...and you don't.

Your reputation and credibility isn't established or enhanced by your profitability focus, it is diminished by the growing reputation among writers that quality writing isn't what you want, you want money at the expense of your supporters and contributors.

At first I thought," Hey, this is a good thing, right?" Separate the wheat from the chaff, get the good writer's to appreciate the attempts at quality site construction and management.

Wrong, print breath!

The site itself is good, the site concept is great-the Review and Rating process, the navigation and Content presentation (even though I think Categories needs some work).

However, the Editorial management of your site lacks an understanding of the "value" of your product and those who create it; arrogant, unfeeling, and worst, badly conceived.

Substituting your judgement for that of writers who work at their craft and produce thoughtful and creative product can't possible lead to Love and good will, or even better product. Even a beaten dog stops asking for more "Love" if the cost is another beating.

The Pack mentality (the "social group"-your writers) doesn't include abuse; abuse leads to desertion.

May I again suggest that you allow the marketplace to work; the good material will be found, read and enjoyed; purchased, archived and promoted as appropriate. The potential extra few percent of traffic and ad revenue you may generate shouldn't be worth the wholesale migration of your writers to other sites, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Again, this is just one man's Opinion; take it for what is worth.
