Writers: Is There a Book Inside of You? It's Time to Let it Out!

Karen Cook
You've always wanted to write. You can't remember a time when the idea of writing was not a part of your soul.

When your teacher gave book reports or essay assignments in school, it was an opportunity for celebration. Even as the rest of your classmates groaned.

So what happened? Why is the book that you know is inside of you, not out there for all the world to see? Probably because of the same maladies that afflict so many would-be writers.

----Confidence

As a young child, you had healthy self-confidence. You knew you could do anything you had put your mind to doing. Over time, as your parents, teachers and peers brain-washed you with their own mind sets, your self-esteem slowly took a beating. You kept your dream of being a writer to yourself.

----Schooling

The old cliche. Get your education. Get a job working for someone else. It has been drilled into your head from the get-go. Don't you dare be different, or else!

----Distractions

Call it peer pressure or whatever works for you. Along the way, you began to follow the herd. When you really wanted to stay at home writing, all your friends were out partying and dating. You gave in, of course.

Falling in love. Talk about the mother of all distractions. Nothing else exists except the objection of your affection. Writing...what's that?

Co-habitation, marrying, children, jobs and the day-to-day living responsibilities finally dealt the knock-out punch to your desire to become a writer. Life just became too busy!

But through it all, deep down in your core, the desire never truly died. You just kept telling yourself, "Someday, when life becomes more settled, less stressful, I'll do something about my writing dreams."

Maybe you see yourself as writing a book that goes on to be a bestseller. And it's made into a movie. Well, it could happen. Or you feel you'd be satisfied with writing just for the process of writing. Or somewhere in between.

On your many visits to bookstores, you notice how many non-fiction titles are on the shelves and you think, "Hey, I could write something like that."

So...maybe the time is NOW. You will want to prioritize your time. Cut out activities that just suck the life out of you and give you nothing to show for it. Watching television is one thing that comes to mind. Even TV addicts are amazed by how little they miss watching their favorite shows when they finally pull the plug. Be brave. Just say NO to TV.

Create Writing-Orientated Time

----Attend creative writing classes
----Meet and associate with other writers
----Read more books! (no hardship there)
----Subscribe to writer's publications and periodicals
----Go online and research anything to do with writing
----WRITE!

Gradually, you will have your life centered with the things that matter most to you. Your family and friendships don't need to suffer when you balance what counts in life. And get rid of the time-wasters.

As the writing desire that was pushed deep down for so long has a chance to emerge, you'll finally feel like your old forgotten self again. That young soul who knew without a doubt that anything was possible!
