Writing Articles: Improve Your Writing

For the Linguistic Illiterate

Writer One
Writing an article full of colorful language or an advanced grasp on the English Language is difficult for most, however, your writing ability can improve greatly after a short reworking of your approach.

1. Vocabulary

Yes, we all should know having more than a basic vocabulary can get you far in writing, however, where is the proper level to write at. You want to use words that are above colloquial speaking (Avoid like, stuff, and preferably eliminate the word is from your writing). While it is important to use proper, and demonstrate a more experienced grasp of the language, you do not want to write in such a complex manner that the average reader requires a dictionary next to them. The best way to overcome this is upon editing your piece, drift through with a thesaurus and look for words you recognize, but don't commonly use in conversation to replace and simple mannerisms.

2. Content

Content should be seen as an open ended sea of possibilities. You can write about whatever inspires passion in you, for example, I'm a musician, so I like to try writing about what I know about music (As limited as that may be). You may be a farmer, and find passion in growing crops, you may be an astronomer, and would love to talk about the stars and galaxies. It doesn't matter what you are interested in, or feel comfortable writing about, just write it, there will always be an audience for almost any subject you can conjure up. If you don't believe me, look at Twitter, you really think anyone would sign up to read about people's mundane lives? You wouldn't of course, but they have over 5 million subscribers.

3. Language

Metaphors and the like usually frighten amateur writers. Simply remember you don't need too much colorful language to create a piece with personality, but you do need some. If they don't flow naturally for you, try to read through afterwards and compare concepts and objects with other concepts and objects, eventually, one should come to mind, and simply add it into the text. In this way, you can add as much, or as little colorful writing as you like. Search for places to add adjectives, whatever makes the writing interesting to you, add it.

Best of luck in your writing endeavors, remember that the only way to improve, is to practice.
