Writing a Book in India-Conditions Apply!

Chinmay Chakravarty
Planning to write a book in India or for India? Well, you are most welcome to do that. But a few terms and conditions do apply.

You may wonder why. India is the largest democracy of the world and freedom of expression is a fundamental right here. But, at the same time India is multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-political. These elements let loose such a strong intense and nonsense crosscurrent of emotions that you feel like forsaking your own, forget expression.

So, it is always healthier, wiser and wealthier to first take stock of the conditions and adhere blindly to it; and then, go about writing your book. The same set of conditions apply irrespective of what you write-a book of poems, a novel, a thriller, researched non-fiction or a book of essays.

Take a look at the conditions and consider them mandatory for your own safety.

• Select a topic which is so element-neutral that you no longer feel the urge of expressing your opinion.
• Select a location which is so nondescript that nobody gives a damn whether you blab flab or dab about it.
• Select your characters from a community which is so lost in the ocean of crosscurrent that it no longer enjoys its own elements or existence or identity.
• You are free to select the language. This is because, even if somebody happens to scowl at your book you can be damn sure that s/he would never know what the book actually contains.
• If you belong to a particular community be advised to write only positive things about that community. Never ever give even a hint or a trace of a negative trait.
• Always meet beforehand a set of differential stalwarts of the society and seek their expert opinion if framing your own, if any.
• If you are in political party you are living dangerously. Spell out, rehearse, punctuate, pronounce and vomit out the contents of your manuscript most completely and exhaustively till every member of the party steering committee grants his or her consent. Else, you will get expelled unawares.

So then, go ahead and write your book. Stick to the conditions and have your marketing success.
