Writing a College Application Essay Tips

There are many reasons why colleges and universities require an essay to go along with the application for entrance into their college or university, but the main reason is to give them a better idea of what you are like, as a person.

These tips will help you to have a better idea of what is expected of your essay, and to help make writing your essay, easier.

1. Relax

Remember when your mother used to tell you to just be yourself? Well, that is what is needed here. The school wants to know you, and what you are like as a person. Besides, writing an essay is certainly much easier than having to appear in person, and giving an oral report.

2. Mechanics Matter

Spelling, punctuation and the way you form your sentences all matter when it comes to your College Application Essay. It is also important to know that you cannot rely too heavily on "SpellCheck." There are times that I have put in 'it' instead of 'at,' and it shows up okay, in the typing. What I do with an important essay or report, is print out a copy, go over it myself, then have someone else read it through. That way, the chances of having an overlooked mistake are quite slim.

3. Choose a topic that you can relate to

It is not a very good idea to write on a topic that you don't have a passion for, or that you do not know very much about. Your essay will show it; it will come across too vague.

If you are having trouble choosing a topic, try writing about a concern that you might have, or a person that has had an impact on your life.

You could also write about specific goals that you might have and how they will be best fulfilled by attending that particular school.

4. After you have chosen your topic; have a basic outline. It will help you to stay on track, and not veer off topic. Have an introduction; go into the body, and then conclude. It is that simple.

5. It's okay to be personal and reveal your character

It is important that you understand, that letting others know about your goals and achievements is not bragging. In most cases, how else are they going to know about them if you do not write about them, and tell them?

6. Make your essay interesting

Don't write a lot of facts and statements. That is very dry, and will not hold a reader's interest. Write it, as if you are writing about the most interesting thing in the whole world, and you are communicating it to your best friend. I guarantee it will hold the reader's interest.

Remember to let the college know you, and who you are; that is important. After that, relax - and Good Luck.
