Writing Good eBay Titles

In the gigantic global ocean of buyers and sellers that is EBay, getting noticed when you're another droplet in the sea is the immense challenge that faces budding EBay power sellers these days. Since most people who browse EBay search titles, neither content nor topics are what get your listings to the top of the search results. It's the one line you type in first, the title, that is the most important piece of text for your listing.

Using comments like "very rare" "one of a kind" or "great price" will not help you get noticed. Cliché's are usually a turn off. Think of how spam e-mails sound for get rich quick schemes that you habitually delete. They sound similar to these.

Try and imagine that you're shopping for an item and imagine in your mind what you would type to find that product. Also, do some research on the top sellers and look at what they're writing. It's okay to copy their style. It's smart. Everything that has worked has been done before, so why re-invent the wheel?

Also, buyers want specifics. I found that when I was selling some of my wholesale leather jackets, I got some hits, but buyers bombarded me with a bunch of specific questions. Since I was selling through a wholesale drop shipper, I didn't have specific answers and I didn't sound like an expert. Some buyers want to feel like they're dealing with an expert merchant. I learned it was important to include sizes and measurements in my title and other specific details.

At the very least, you need the brand and model. This is very important, especially for electronics, as a lot of shoppers are looking for a component that may be compatible with other things they own or are planning on buying.

An example of a good title for an EBay listing might be: College Road Trip 2008 Blu-ray Disc NEW STILL SEALED. It is up on EBay right now from a seller with a 100% satisfaction rating. It packs a lot of description in the short space allowed for headlines, and contains specific information about the type of disc they are selling. Someone looking for a specific type of resolution and something that will work with their equipment will search for things like this. Also, the phrase New Still Sealed signifies that you're getting something like you're buying it right from the store. New could mean used, just that it looks new. Still Sealed adds some extra weight to the meaning of "New".

Another listing for a golf club set that has 22 current bids on it right now reads NIKE SQ SUMO² IRON SET 4-AW GRAPHITE REGULAR R NEW!! This is a perfect headline for specifics. In fact, I can't imagine getting more specific. An avid golfer who is an experienced shopper will be very well versed in specific attributes of a club, which are very important to a player looking for a product that will increase his or her game even a little bit. For a product like this, it's not about description. This will get a lot more hits than a headline that just describes a great deal on a brand new set of Nike Irons.

There are tons of books on EBay about the right way or wrong way to do things. However, EBay is a rather ambiguous business. I make a pretty good part time income selling on EBay and I have found that the more I do it, the more I learn. The best place to learn is not by buying a book or trying to come up with a formula, but by staying within EBay itself. Adopt the habits of highly success EBay sellers and you will achieve what they have eventually. After awhile, it starts to become automatic. You might find yourself thinking like a seller and a buyer all the time, which is great. That's how you expand your business even further and create yourself an EBay empire.
