Writing a Great Thesis Statement

Natasha Stiller
The purpose of a research paper is to investigate a topic or question and to articulate the answers through debate, research, and inquisitiveness. Good research paper writing tackles questions and provides an array of research to back up the findings of the writer. In a research paper individuals can compare and contrast, provide analysis, and evaluate a number of topics. Research papers serve value to those in academia as a wealth of knowledge, understanding, and seek for truth.

At the heart of a research paper is the introduction or abstract. Within this opening of a research paper, you will find the thesis statement. If you are unfamiliar with thesis statements you can browse online and locate research papers via the web to review thesis statement examples. Thesis statements are common in standard essays as well as in-depth research papers.

A thesis statement is:

· One sentence that introduces the main topics of discussion to your reader

· Provides the main idea to your research

· Provides the reader with a details of what to expect in the body of your research paper

· Placed in the introduction of your research

A thesis statement should not:

· Be longer than a sentence

· Be posed as a question '" a question doesn't provide enough details about what your research is introducing or focusing on

· Be placed outside of the introduction of your paper

Thesis statements for research papers are generally considered working theses, as you write because you might choose to adapt or make modifications to your thesis statement as you work. A final thesis statement is what you will end up with when your research paper is completed. Your thesis should be addressed specifically in the body of your writing.

Thesis statements can adapt and change as you dig deeper in accumulating resources for your research. You might find that a different approach to your original idea is necessary to convey your message to your readers thoroughly. This happens often as writers locate resource materials that provide a different perspective on a topic or perhaps even invalidate your original idea for a thesis.

Thesis statements are often completed at the very end of a research paper, still located in your introduction, just written last. Since the thesis statement often changes and needs to be re-written, some writers choose to have a general focus on what they want to provide to readers in their thesis, then complete their research, write, and finalize their thesis last. This is all dependent on your style and if you like a concrete introduction for yourself completed first. Changing the thesis statement does often change other pre-writing tools, such as an outline. However, these can be changed with ease. The thesis statement helps writers provide a clear objective for their research, writing, and communicating their ideas to others.
